I am looking for the upper tier but not the top as its never cost efficient to but the "best" unless you won the lotto.

I've always been a faithful Nvidia customer and now have the gtx-285 SLI (2). I've been doing a lot of reading as of late and it seems like the 770 I was planning on getting has been replaced with ATi R9 280x (and 290 which is more akin to the 780). I'm planning on gaming and that’s the reason why I'm currently planning on a new build. I would like to get a board that is good enough now but when prices drop I would be able to buy another, I doubt it really makes too much of a difference to get 3 or 4. I'm just looking for the most bang for the buck (but in the upper tier because then id be getting an i5 not i7). Thanks for the advice.

P.S. Is it worth to wait for anything coming down the pike, obviously that’s always true but in the current hardware pipeline?

Well, I think the 780 TI is the king gpu now. All the way to 1600p rez, no other card will out do it

Dual GPU King: R9 295x2

Single GPU King: GTX780Ti

Depends on the resolution your looking at and the game in all honesty.

If we are talking about to 1600p, the chart normally goes as follows (Left being the most powerful)

GTX 780ti, R9 290X, GTX 780, R9 290, R9 280X, GTX 770, R9 280, GTX 760 and so on

Then there are the Dual GPU's which go as follows.

R9 295X2, Titan-Z

I do not include the Titans in those charts because they are normally not included to be true gaming cards. But if added the Titan Black would be top followed by 780ti, then 290X, then titan original.

Personally, I wouldn't spend too much on a GPU right now, because when the high end Maxwells come out, you just may regret it. As good as the 780 Ti is, keep in mind, it's not only expensive, it's re-branded architecture, and it's just a 3GB card.

Go with a 290 or 780 (non x, non ti)

I think the best performance/price is 280X.
Even better, you could find it very cheap from ex-mining rig that recently flooding the market, just make sure the brand has great warranty cover in your country.

I think the 7970/280X is probably the king of bang for buck these days for the upper tier of performance. 780's are still slightly overpriced, and the next best thing is a 290.

If you look at the benches of Titan Black, you can see that it slightly outperforms 780 Ti. So that's the current GPU king.

With that out, I'd suggest a Galaxy HOF 780 and overclocking it. With a good OC you might go a bit over a 780 Ti.

Yeh I'd say the sweet spot is the R9 280x. I'd personally go for an R9 290 (non-x) or GTX 780 (non-ti) though if you can.

GPU king at the moment though is 780Ti, especially when OCed.

The 780 ti is the fastest single GPU and is my current GPU.

Thinking to watercool it.

I heard that the fastest Maxwell GPU will be cheaper than the 780 Ti.

bang for bucks should be the 290 (non X) its the new 8800GT: cost 200 less than a 290X where i am and they only cut 53Mhz 256 SP and 16 TMU less (the MHZ you can remedy to that with ease :D )

not far from a 290X/780Ti/Titan black on par with a 780/Titan or above in some situations, and if the price go down a bit as predicted (bitcoins gpu mining going down price too) you might find her at a price equal to a 770, till one week the 280X and 770 had the same price and perf now i notice the 280X lowering in price but not the 770 (the high price of nV cards is not due to btc so they stay like they are it seems ) and the 290 (non X ) is almost at the level of the 770 now

780Ti is the fastest but by a small margin 12% above a 290 doesn't justify the price difference

yeah yeah i know 290 is listed at 500$ but its becoming more and more close to the initial launchprice of 399$ at last where i am ... and if lucky you can find a 2nd hand in a good shape, for less than 250$ (no 2nd hands 780 at that price tho, but again it's where i am so i might differ from lands to lands)

i had a 770 nice card if you can get it under 350$ (4gb preferably)

I heard that the fastest Maxwell GPU will be cheaper than the 780 Ti.
knowing nVidia it seems unlikely, but positive side : it will maybe (yep maybe) lower the price of the 780/780Ti/Titan/Titan Black

Thanks for all the input, was wondeing what is the difference bewteen the X and non X card?
Also i dont know if wrote my question right i meant say whats the best GPU in the 300 range. I have the build a system so for me a 770 and 290 makes a big difference.

Another thing, can you please tell me the which mem amount is best (is it a generic number? cuz i recall the time i built my current system i was told no need to go more then 2 or 3 gigs if i rememebr correctly, my other problem is that ive always gone with nvidia and i bought a benq xl2420 so i could get the nvidia 3d add on , do you think the PC 3d is worth it? the one on my TV doesent really blow me away. Lasly, can you please give me 2 manufacturers to go with now i have gtx and really like their tech support.

thanks,
sebastian

R9 280X is better than a GTX 770 at the 300 dollar range if thats what your looking for.

what do you guys think about the different models of the same board like the 770 for ex when i go the GTX site there are like 10 of them to pick from currently i have 2 gtx cards one is generic speed the other is like 100mhz faster cant really tell the difference and do you agree that the best bang for the $ is to go with 2 sli (that when u add more cards you really dont get much more in results)
BTW im just looking for the 1080 thats all my monitor supports and ive not seen a 4k in real life but id bet a lot of money that it will be over 10yrs before it makes sense to get the TV because of lack of content, look at 1080 and how long that took and in that case u actually got a lot of improvement i doubt 4k will be the same and after all it means all tv programming hardware that all cos had to scrap and buy new models capable of 1080 they are not going to be eager to do it again so soon.

SLI/CFX is good for boosting performance but your games have to support it properly or else it hinders or wastes performance. I have done CFX/SLI for so very long now that im just used to it. Its great but the lower you go on the GPU spectrum the worse it gets to you have to be careful. Running 2 GTX 770 or R9 280X cards is fine at that resolution (1080p) and will give you Max on most games. Heck one R9 280X will max most games at 1080p for 60 FPS so thats what I would do if I were you.

do you think the prices of either the 770 or r9 will drop anytime soon (because of a new model coming out)?

Not likely, its going to be awhile before the next major price drop. There are some good deals though on R9 280X cards.

3D gaming and stuff on PC is really opinionated. I've tried it out at a friend's place and I didn't really care for it. I mean it was pretty cool and such but I had a headache after about half an hour of gameplay. But I get a headache with 3D anything generally so that's just me.

2GB or 3GB or 4GB is won't matter much right now at 1080p BUT I think planning to run future titles well, it would be best to get a 3GB graphics card or above in my opinion.

Manufacturers well that is highly opinionated too. Here is a list that I would choose from;
AMD;
- Sapphire
- Gigabyte (although avoid the Gigabyte R9 290 (X and non X) as I've heard some horror stories)
- Asus (avoid their 280X models, both of mine crapped out)
- MSI

Nvidia;
- EVGA
- Gigabyte
- Asus
- MSI

And yeh agreed with GhostRyder, unlikely to see any price drops anytime soon. R9 280Xs are definitely a steal at this juncture though.

BTW, why do they incorporate GPU on the i7-4790k? is it even close to the avg NVidia or AMD? it seems to me like an excuse to raise the price of the cpu

Some people need more CPU power but do not care about the GPU and just need output. That is a reason to include the integrated GPU and its for people doing professional work that requires the CPU's power or general users that need a CPU but only need basic output/decent graphical output. The HD 4600-5200 give decent enough performance to do high resolution videos/blu-rays among other things.

Thanks for all the input,
To be honest, im planning to only going to purchase one gpu and merely wait for prices to drop to purchase the other. The improvement only kicks in at higher frame rates as previously stated. What's your take on the 4k, as i wrote earlier i dont see a reason to get it now (unless you make 400k a year or won the lotto then all this back and forth is pointless id get me a titan z lol) Love day dream of such scenarios hate coming back to earth.

Actually if you don't care about the TN then you might be able to get one of the Samsung 28 inch 4K monitors. They're somewhat affordable and come with excellent pixel density. Having had 2560x1440 for a long time, I've personally already been bored of it. As they say, once you go big you never go back... somewhat...

I am going to a 4k screen as soon as the Asus 28inch is released. I have been on eyefinity for quite some time and have grown rather bored of it so I decided its time for UHD. As far as it being viable, its only if you invest in the top hardware right now and in a CFX/SLI style. Only 4 Cards on the market in 2 way configs have enough power to push decent framerates on games at high settings at a 4k resolution.

The titans are insanely powerful, but also insanely overpriced. Their big advantage is that they can be used for both gaming and HPC. For pure HPC, the Tesla K series, while expensive, is a beast. The 780 Ti, a gamer's card, is powerful, but still pretty expensive. In terms of value, high-end AMD cards score best.
