Hey guys, I have a Ryzen 5 3600 and a 2070 super and looking to upgrade it soon. I was thinking of upgrading to a 7900 xtx and later upgrading the cpu to one of the new AM5 ones. Or I could just upgrade the mobo and cpu now and wait to upgrade the gpu later. What are your thoughts?

What res are you gaming at? What is your budget?
A 3600 is going to hold that XTX back unless you're gaming @ 4K.

You could drop a 5800X3D in and just extend the life of the current build for a bit longer.
That would let you upgrade the GPU and CPU without factoring a new board and RAM into the equation.

A new setup obviously would give you further expandability as well, but again not sure what the budget is here.

At least wait for the RTX 4xxx Supers to arrive in January.

I would upgrade to a 5800X3D and ether get two new 16Gb sticks of DDR3200/3400/3600 or add 2 more 8Gb sticks if the ones you have now are at least DDR3200. Allot of the newer games are pushing 20Gb + in RAM now, like Hogwarts.

Added: I would look at upgrading the storage to an NVME drive, like 1TB or 2TB if you are still using an SSD. It will speed up the system more then you could believe.

I would wait on the video card and see how much the 40XX series suppers are going to coast and what their configuration is going to be. If they are still overpriced, then I would look at 7800XT, 7900GRE or 7900XT.

5800X3D and wait for supers.

32 GB 3800 RAM too.

If they are still overpriced
That's a given. Won't be less than $650 for 4070S, $850 for 4070TiS, $1250 for 4080S.

Waiting is still advised because it's two weeks to the New Year so prices are ridiculous. Everything will be cheaper in a month from now.

Go for 5800X3D + 32 GB 3800 RAM as recommended above.

If he needs to get ram aswell, then he might aswell go for a 7800x3D instead.
No, because then new motherboard is needed plus Windows license etc. DDR4 is cheap and 7800X3D is barely 20% faster at 1080p, not worth it unless you're pairing with 4090 tier that needs that CPU.

At 1440p 7800X3D is 16.5% faster (with a 4090) with weaker GPUs it won't be noticeable.

The main thing is to get off six core segmented chips, onto eight core unified.

(3600 is 3+3 on two CCX, 5800X3D is 8 on one).

Yea DDR4 got a lil cheaper again (don't think it'll go lower), the same 32GB Ripjaw kit I have is $77 on Amazon...damn...

Alright, tbh I might aswell just go get an AM5 board and save myself the time in the future. Thanks for the support

Lol, are you seriously using a windows license, which can be had for 10 bucks, as a reason to not upgrade platform ?

If he is going to buy new cpu and ram, then he may aswell get the new platform, with all the upgrades and longevity that it entails. 7800x3d + ddr5 is only a smidge more expensive than 5800x3d + ddr4, and a decent mobo can be had for reasonable money aswell.

But it seems like you are only looking at the hardware he has now, ignoring what he said he thought of buying for his upgrade - 7900XTX. And for that he would deffo want the 7800x3d, which he is hinting at wanting aswell...
