I want to free my shelf space of my DVDs and put them on my external HDD.
What I want to know is what programs you use to get this done @ mid/high quality.
I want to be able to rip a DVD at fairly good quality, having at least a 700x400 or greater resolution. Is this possible?
edit: I want something that is fairly easy to work with....suggestions are appreciated.

It largely depends upon your budget and time.

Freeware:
Rip with slysoft
Convert .vobs to .avi with mediacoder

Paid/free (the way I do it):
Rip with DVD fab
Convert to .mkv using handbrake

Paid (one program):
Convert from DVD to .avi using DVD fab

The paid/free way is what I use. Handbrake can set sizes, resolutions, include subtitles, and multiple audio tracks. DVD fab is a bit on the expensive side, but very worth it.

The fully free way requires a slysoft, which tends to have problems with newer DVD encryption schemes.

The fully paid route is easiest, but lacks some of the features of the paid/free option. If you're new to the process, or using a low power computer, it's the best way to go.

The real question is how long are you willing to spend transcoding.... It may take longer than you think.

Additionally, if you have questions with handbrake shoot me a PM. The program is friendlier than mediacoder, but doesn't include tutorials for newcomers.

Should we even be talking about this on TPU?

I don't believe this is legal.

There are dozens of ripping products sold in the USA that aren't considered contraband so I'd say it is not, as long as it is for personal back up use and for illegal redistribution/sales.

It's really no different than ripping a CD to your personal music collection.

Most of them get sued and shut down, which is why you can't really buy them retail in the US anymore.

It is legal in other parts of the world I know, but in the US anything that breaks the copy protection on comerical DVDs is considered illegal.(Thank the DMCA for that BS.)

I'm not judging, I mean I rip DVDs and have a huge digital video collection from ripped DVDs, but I've just seen topics like this before on TPU and they always get close, I just don't want people getting in trouble here at TPU.:toast:

Since this is a dangerous topic to discuss, I want to request that this thread gets closed. I will talk about it in closed quarters versus a public discussion.

I use DVD decryptor and then convert with AutoGK.
You can also use AutoMKV which is more complicated but can give you even clearer image but a decent processor is required or encoding will take a long time.
I prefer to rip DVDs on to my HDD to view as I can zip from one part to another and not have insert a DVD.

All of the above are free.

I have tried DVD clone which is payware, all in one utility but didn't like the result due to limited options for avi format.
