i just got a new amp yesterday a sony str-db 840.i just wondered if it would sound better using the x-fi with analogue connections to the amp or using the onboard sound with a digital signal to the amp?

It depends on how good your onboard sound is tbh. I personally would use the X-Fi, why let it go to waste :)

I use a coaxial to connect my DVD/DivX player to my 5.1 setup and it sounds just as when I connect via optical :)

PS: Nice amp, thats about 10 models above mine lol :)

If youre onboard has dolby digital or dts then use that, otherwise onboard spdif out just carries dd/dts to the amp, music/games will be limited to 2 channel same as with x-fi's digital out.
I got myself a cheap soundcard with dolby live encoding for my rig thats plugged into my digital receiver (this) but obviously, its not a patch on the x-fi for games
The other option would be to connect to youre amps external decoder input with 3 mini jack-rca leads

Though my experiences i found that optical \ Digital has less bass but can sound clearer.. All so i has a nasty problem with Optical which forced me not to use it with this setup where the sound would break up but not right away it did it when it felt like it and when it started it never stoped there after..

I've always favored Analog more than digital my self but had to try it due to some feed back i was getting though phono connectors.

If it's not going cost you any thing it's worth a try. I still think a record sounds much better than CD's.

Best way is to try it and find out for your self.

Nice AMP BTW.

What i have been wondering if i could get a HDMI connector with a optical plug on the other side see if it's the sound card \ software thats making these problems.

BUT now i am glad that the digi optical has a issue as i have noticed more UMMPH bigger bass but not to much though.
