I'm looking at these two, I already have i5 10500 and g.skill trident neo 3600 mhz CL16 as a stop gap until RocketLake comes, then I'm going to put in 8core RL and sell this i5.

1. Asus ROG Strix-F z490

2. Asrock Z490 Extreme 4

Asrock is fully pcie 4.0 ready, while Asus only has 16x pcie slot., but I do like Asus bios more.. any suggestions?

Personally, unless you need it right now, I'd wait for a Z590 board. While I've read that RL will be compatible with Z490 boards, the Z590 will support 'additional features'.

The Gigabyte Z490 that I have has an M.2 slot that's marked 'Reserved for future use', but I'm not holding my breath it'll be supported for nvme 4.0. Same feeling for the PCIe 16x slot.

I already have ram and cpu, but i want the mobo be as futureproof as possible, so I can't wait until Z590.

So far only MSI MPG carbon, Gaming Edge and this Asrock extreme, Taichi and few Gigabyte Auros are, which cost too much.,

But surprisingly almost no Asus is, which I prefer the most. Ok pcie16x gpu slot is, but looks like that's about it.

Maybe buy a Z490 based on the brand or features you want/need now, and if you find Z590 offers something you want after Rocket Lake-S arrives, either re-purpose or sell and get a Z590.

Just my two cents.

Fast forward few months later.. I got a Msi z490 unify, great board.. I know it's irrelevant now with z590 and soon z690, but it is a great solid cold vrm board. Really like it, wasnt such a msi fan to begin with, preferred Asus, but now I would happily recommend Msi.

Hi,
Asus has the best bios
Trident-z Neo is for amd platforms though.

z590 would be better since you aren't going for a 10 core on z490

All I know is thunderbolt normally has less issues on Asrock if that's something you need.

I have the mobo for a while now, will eventually put in 11700kf or maaybe 11900f but I saw it boosts lower in longer run.

Also the ram I have gskill tridentz cl16-16-16 can run np 4233mhz cl16 @1.45v :), although Im running it at 3960mhz cl16 @1.40v

Hi,
Intel power limits easy to disable.
