Whats up with rendering a bunch of FUR ? Why is it the harder than games where GPU renders a ton of other stuff while in Furmark it only renders a fur doughnut ?

mmmmmmmmmm, doughnuts

Fur was designed like how the Cube is on ATI tool.. To Fully stress the Core(s) on the GPU...

i think what he is asking is why/how does it stress the cores so hard...

Does the fur move? I have never seen furmark but if the fur moves then that is your answer. It needs to simulate every strand of hair on that 'doughnut' and because every strand is moving differently it needs to calculate all that.

the fur doesn't move so much as the whole doughnut rotates...with fur on it

mmmmm...doughnuts

i think vector calculations is what causing so much stress
but, i don't know that much
i've seen some code for similar simulations, although that was a long time ago, i could recall that it was more of illusion than render of each hair. there is no hair, it is just exaggeration of texture, so to speak

Quoted from the Furmark web page;

FurMark is a very intensive OpenGL benchmark that uses fur rendering algorithms to measure the performance of the graphics card. Fur rendering is especially adapted to overheat the GPU and that's why FurMark is also a perfect stability and stress test tool (also called GPU burner) for the graphics card.

I disagree that it's perfect tool for every video card, but it's fun to play with...

The fur has the physics!

its hard because they left the doughnut out for a few weeks.

its because its all shaders. no textures, no walls... its all 100% on the GPU, from the main component of the GPU (shaders)

why did you have to spoil my fun? I almost had them!

it's not really fur, but the technique how fur is rendered in such apps. nothing has to move to be hard on the gpu

You can see how HOT your card can get.

and pop your PSU :)

furmark uses 100W more than 3D gaming for me, measured at the wall.
