This just popped up on my screen.

I was looking for a link on that page with something like "get Windows 11 here" with a special 70% discount for a special life-long customer. But nah, just a Oct 2025 end of support slap in the face. Not even a trade-in deal, you know give us your hair dryer and we'll trim 40%. Not even, some bundled software offers, you now Office 365 for 20% off. Not even a coffee coaster. Nothing. I guess the slap was for FREE (can't complain)

This only happens if your PC doesn't meet the official 11 requirements (maybe TPM or secureboot is off?) Otherwise you would have been auto upgraded, most likely.

is there any command prompt i can do to disable all updates for windows 10?

Yep, i7-7700K not officially supported for Win 11. TPM functionality is supported, but requires a TPM module. From what I understand Win 11 only supports 8th Gen/newer, which unfortunately leaves Kaby Lake out of the picture.

I understand there are workarounds but is that with security and future update compromises?

For a spare build, yes. I was actually already considering this after a Linux-related chat on another thread a couple of days ago. I've never used any of the desktop Linux distros before. The closest I've come is Android on mobile/tablets, and MINIX (android) on the big tele - which I understand are quite different from the standard Linux environments, even if they're built on the Linux kernel.

For my main work build, unfortunately I'm tied to Windows due to specific software requirements. If I end up swapping platforms, a repurposed 7700K for Linux it is (actually i've got a bunch of spare machines so no excuses to get experimenting)

Not a single command line but if you look through my post history I recently did a writeup on how to acomplish this.

I'd link it but I'm in a hurry. I post a lot so you may have to dig a tiny bit. It was in one of the W11 threads pretty sure.

You can try Kubuntu from a USB stick - it runs directly. You could also install it on a separate disk or SSD. As for Windows, you could try a virtual machine under Linux (link below). VirtualBox is easy to install and setup on Kubuntu.

people claimed i was wrong

w11 pro 24h2 has much higher cpu list as the old intel 8 core gen. I'm glad i sold the 8gen intel laptop. I'll watch and see if the newer list still applies which some people refuse to admit.

my 200€ including shipping and tax lenovo 15" laptop wiht ryzen pro 4650u and 8gib dram is much faster as hte previous intel 8...u gen processor with 8gib dram. e-waste for daily work
last wednesday I wanted to apply updates for that ryzren pro 4650u laptop. took up to 5 or 7 seconds to open some stuff. That is a really nice machine for a linux kernel and some gnu userspace or freebsd.
The nvme is very fast on that laptop. I move data to a usb pendrive which is not a slow one. w11 pro 24h2 which fails on updates on that machine just needs too much ressources and has a bad scheduler and bad management of a good machine. That lenovo laptop with ryzen pro 4650u is just according to the serial number out of the 4 year warranty period. Not even 5 years old and it struggles. Decent good machine, but w11 pro 24h2 is just too consuming for 1x windows update + 1x vivaldi browser (i also tried with edge; i also tried with librewolf). opening the taskmgr takes time. or opening the windows explorer to check disk space.

I do not see much e-waste value in EURO when I get a 4 year old refurbished laptop with ryzen pro 4650u processor and two DRAM sockets. spend 50€ for 2x sodimm DDR modules which fits, maybe 2x8Gib or 2x16gib ... or whatever fits to get a decent machine. It has 1 year warranty. Lots of machines for sale.

people should face reality, their hardware is too slow. Linux kernel and gnu usrspace is something to laugh about. Just go and buy something new. As a collegue does for his wife and his kids. 800€ or more for a new computer or laptop is for sure the better way. Who dares to read how to install ... something else. People forget about FreeBSD. There is other software also -> hackingtosh, ... LInux does not work succesful as embedded linux, or in the form of android, or ... succesful anyway. even my car radio from LG in two famous european car brands uses gnu linux and windows ce anymore. windows ce was very bad and sluggish in car radios.
