Hello, I'm having some issues installing Windows 7 RC1. I have a 750 gig HDD I split up for two OS's; Windows XP SP3 and Windows 7 RC1. The XP partition is 500 gigs, and the Windows 7 partition is 250 gigs. When I try to launch the installation of Windows 7 from the menu where you select the disk partition, I get the following message:

"Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See Setup log file for more information."

I've never had issues installing Windows as bad as this. What does Windows 7 need? I mean, I gave it a 250 gb partition, properly format it from the Windows 7 menu, and select it for installation, but the punishing message keeps comming up. XP recognises the partition that the Windows 7 installation disk created as an NTFS. And, I don't see where is this Setup log file!

Any help appreciated.

unplug all the hard drives except the one the OS is going on, and make sure its on SATA port 0.

Other than that you may need the sata controller drivers on a USB stick. not sure.

To be honest dual booting with an existing OS is asking for trouble, particularly with an OS you know you need to format sooner or later.

he doesn`t need the drivers, just unplug the drive with XP, then go ahead with 7. that should do it.worked for me.

RTFM guys, one drive; partitioned into two partitions.


I haven't dual-booted since Win95 so I'm no help, but I figured I'd point that out.

don't pre-format the partition or do any further configuration on the partion. it should be raw.
win7 will handle partitioning and formating itself.

My guess is that Windows 7 needs to be on the first disk partition...

This is true, if you didn't leave any space for the second partition it creates that may be causing an error.

It will only be a 200 MB separate partition.

Well, I just discovered (using Partition Magic 8) that my Windows XP disk is labelled as BAD!!! So, Windows 7 installation broke it (from a Partition Magic 8 standpoint). Anyone has a hint as to which tool I should use to fix my XP drive? The XP OS boots, and it gives proper FREE DISK SPACE... Nyways, Microsoft did something very wrong with this Windows 7 install tool...

EDIT: Oh forget it, I fixed it using the Windows 7 installation tool, by deleting the Windows 7 partition and Extending the Windows XP partition. Now things are back to normal again.
