A friend has just brought a netbook much to my dislike, anyways it come with Windows 7 Starter Edition pre-installed and I'm just curious if any of you guys have figured a way out how to change the desktop background on this?

Win 7 Starter STINKS

MS should be embarrassed at this cut down half baked limited cheap pretender.

My new netbook came with it. SO AWEFUL is it, I down graded to XP. Much better.

Win 7 Starter has given me such a bad impression of Win 7 I will NOT upgrade any machine to Win 7 no matter that so many people like it.

Well Home Basic at least to be fair. Only 3 simultaneous apps is lame even for a 1GHz/1GB netbook.

Starter is a pile of crap, but Win7 is the best thing MS has made since XP. Fast and so for very stable. I've been putting it on all the computers I use and my family cause its that good :D

i have it on all our pcs too....i love how simple the networking is, since i had laot of issues in xp with my home network.

Ohhhh I knew they'd be some like's and dislike's about Windows 7 Starter for obvious reason's, but come on, anything from Windows 7 Home Basic/Premium is pretty good work by MS, as mentioned though Starter is a waste of time and money and will only hurt netbooks rep.

@Pyeti & Fritoking: I will check the link's out a littler later when I've got the netbook with me to have a little play and see what I can do about the desktop background.

Windows 7 on a netbook, ...okey...
XP and Ubuntu are nice too

if you need to keep windows 7 starter maybe the "Godmode" works for it?

It is why they are cheap, MS is basically GIVING Win7 Start to you for free. If you want something better, pay the $75 for the anytime upgrade. It really isn't that expensive, and if the netbook manufacturer had put Home Premium on the netbook to begin with, you probably would have paid more than $75 for it...

Windows 7 actually works great on netbooks, better than XP for me.

Seem's this is turning to be a general discussion about Windows 7 Starter :)

Well the simple answer to your question was no, you can't change it without a third part program from what I read in the posts.

The other thing I see is, get rid of Win7 Starter. Just toss it to the wind and get something that will allow you to change the background. There are some nice, free stuff out their your firend can try with fully functional backgrounds.

Ubuntu 9.10
DamnSmallLinux
JolliCloud (personal rec.)
Upgrade to Win7 Home
Downgrade to XP or Vista

IF it was mine then yeah I think I would change the OS to Ubuntu, but it's not so not my choice, I don't think Windows 7 is all that bad, it's designed for netbooks and made my Microsoft... seriously what more do you expect from a starter edition. it's perfect for the young boy/girl who's starting high school or something like that.

Well I kinda expected an complete OS, not part of 1. I wasn't designed for Netbooks, they just butchered Win7 until it was lost between barely working and not too much to hurt Netbook Battery life.

I don't know your friend or how old he is, but a netbook is designed to play a little music, browse the web, and may watch a video or two on the go. They are not designed for day to day usage to do homework on (assuming homework last for more than 2 hours), because the small screen will hurt your eyes faster than an actually laptop.

I could be completely wrong, but Netbooks are very much a nitch market and I personally don't like them. I don't really see them surviving the E-Reader rise to power unless they get merged into 1 cool device like this:

Which is exactly what she want's it for, she's a young student and it's all about the fashion trend so some kind of over powered beast would be pointless for someone like her to have, and yet those kind of people is the kind of people Windows 7 Starter appeals to for all there own reason's, kind of in the same way we like better graphics for gaming.... it's what we want. and what is ideal for each of us.

Well if that is all it needed to do, then leave it be and just find a 3-party program to change the wallpaper, if that can be done.

The Starter Edition thing has been around since XP, and pretty much had the same limitations. It was Microsoft's "here have this for free" OS. Of course, Microsoft eventually just started giving away XP Home for free, as long as the computers met certain requirements(max 1GB RAM, max 160GB hard drive). They only did this because XP, to them, was dead. They aren't going to do the same with their current flagship product.

As for a netbook's usefulness and purpose: I think people tend to forget that. They were designed originally(I'm talking the 7" ones) as extremely cheap Internet only computer(hence the term net in the name). And I would agree with you, that those with the 7" screens were a pain to do anything other than browse the internet on and listen to some music. However, my 10" netbook is great. If I was a student, I wouldn't mind having a netbook as my primary computer, doing homewook included. The 10" screen is a little small, but not too small to work comfortably on for long periods of time.
