I have a system running windows 98. Now it appears to have a virus and a few system files are missing. Mainly vredir.vxd and msnp32.dll. Now I need the msnp32.dll for networking. So I replaced the file to its respective directory(this worked for another missing file) but the system doesnt find it. Also the vredir file refuses to get extracted or copied into that system so does this mean the virus still exists. Will connecting the hdd to another system and running a virus scan with avg help. Anyone know this virus and a software designed to fix this?
Please help.

reinstall?

Try, How to Extract Original Compressed Windows Files; http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q129605/

The files are probably still there, that message usually pops up when files become "unbound" in the registry, or when a network device or protocol is missing files.

You should be able to just download AVG to a jump drive then install and run it. :toast:

I hate reinstalling windows. The reason I dont want to scan directly from that PC is cause its a very old celron and it will take an whole day to scan for itself+system files will be blocked.
I will try that extraction procedure.

Well one file got replaced correctly(vredir.vxd). but the main file msnp32.dll doesn't get detected even after following the link.
