Ok here is a discovery on the Windows Audio Service, which applies to Vista~11, maybe XP/2000. If you ever have a red x on the audio icon in the task bar and you know the audio drivers are installed, trying to fix it through windows troubeshooter typically fails.
1 way to fix is: Run services.msc
Try and start the Windows Audio Service, if it fails with a 1068 error, do not change any properties with it other than to autostart if not already.
Find RPC make sure it is Auto Start.
Find Multimedia Scheduler, Auto Start, Reboot System, that issue should be fixed.
Windows Audio Service depends on RPC and Multimedia Scheduler, do not disable them.
This was probably the 1 time I killed the multimedia service to get an APU rig to function smoother (low and behold AVAST became bloatware) which broke the audio output, ofc using blackviper.com windows services cleanup list. Just tread lightly
