So I bought this Brother MFC-J470DW nearly a year ago.
The problem is not with the printer. I can print, make photocopies etc.
I never needed to scan anything before today, and when I tried I got this:

I've always kept the printer's drivers up to date.

There have been some issues with my pc (not printer related) for example some Steam games like Fallout 4 and Skyrim don't save unless I start Steam as administrator. I tried turning UAC totally off yet it didn't help.
But I didn't bother much as long as I knew the solution.

I'm fine with doing a clean install but I wouldn't want to do it and re-install everything only to find out that Windows Fax & Scan still wouldn't work. That's why I need to know why this is happening.

I can't say it's the same for your hardware but with my HP fax scan printer I have to have the HP software installed to run the scanner properly

Then I just launch the HP program and do the scan operation from there

Check manufacturer for some type of software suite BP. I have to use Epson Scan utility in order for mine to work.

Edit: I'm coming up with a cartridge instead with that part #, could you confirm model again?

Try downloading the software here (hoping the link works on your side)

Funny thought Windows Twain Drivers were supposed to give Reasonable functionality from within other win progs as well as the OEM Software

Not me. In fact, I NEVER EVER install the software that comes with these devices - except the basic drivers from the webpage.

If the device is already network capable like my HP 7525, you can just use your browser to log directly into the device's internal web server and do just about anything you can do with their bloated, fluffed up software suite that typically foists all sorts of unneeded junk on your system too.

For example, I can enter my HP's IP into my browser, enter the password and check ink status. I can fax documents, scan documents and save them to the computer, check logs, change settings and more.

Since that brother is network ready, if connected via your network, you can print out a network report for the IP, or log into your router's admin menu and check the list of connected devices to get the IP.

Have been messing with user accounts?
Removing and adding again Windows Fax'n'scan did not help?
It uses some folders like "incoming faxes" etc in My documents. As that program is very old maybe it doesn't "know" were you moved Your My Documents folder.
