Change hard disk icon in File Explorer

To manually change the icons of the hard disks (partitions) in File Explorer in Windows 7, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, you need to go to the Registry.

Start regedit and call it. / WIN key + R

Or start menu / start screen type regedit.exe and run it
to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons

go
right click on DriveIcons in the left directory tree

Observe permissions of the registry!
(Maybe u must apply permissions in the registry)

  • Create a new key for the respective drives. Example name: C for drive / partition C etc.
  • Right click on C
  • Again create a new key with the name DefaultIcon
  • Now in the right part double click the value (Default) and enter as value: the [your] path to the new icon. (See picture)

It is also possible to create a *.exe file that contains the new icon.

note:

*.ico with transparent backgrounds and a resolution of 256px are the most suitable. There are sites u can use to convert them for free.
__search convert png to ico for example__

That's it.
ez!

Now you can assign a different hard disk icon for each additional partition according to these instructions.
