my computer won't run the automatic updates for windows. I need to fix this. I'm not dumb. It's disabled and i tried to enable it, but when i click on the start button, it doesn't start, and automaticly disables it

it won't turn on, that's what i'm having problems with

Try activating it from services.msc

Start Menu - Run - "services.msc" + enter - Automatic Updates

Should be the 4th one down...

that's where i tried to activate it. i would highlight automatic, it says, service stopped, so then i click start and it says "could not start the automatic updates service on local computer
error 1058: the service, either because it is disabled, or because it has no enabled devices associated with it."
i think this all started when i updated to Service Pack 3

Restart in safe mode and try it there.

Hmm enable Background intelligent transfer and automatic update, I think there is another service related to it, let me remember cause I had the same thing happen on me before...

Background intelligent transfer is enabled, will try safe mode now

still doesn't work in SafeMode

Btw which version of xp is that? 64 bit pro or just 32 bit pro. Coz there is an alternate way of using win updates on 64 bits that has stopped from updating..

32bit, still not working

i think i'm just gonna do a System Recovery if no one can give me a solution soon

will try give me a minute

use autopatcher

/thread

just ran autopatcher, still doesn't work

Try at YOUR own risk. And you MIGHT want to ty the other thing after(http://forums.techpowerup.com/showpost.php?p=637790&postcount=2).

What happens when you try update though IE ?..

Step 1: Remove the temporary folders of Windows Update.

1. Restart the computer.

2. Keep pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears.

3. Choose Safe Mode, and press Enter.

4. After we log on, please click Start, click Run, type in "cmd" (without quotations) and press Enter. Please run the following commands in the opened window to remove the folder.

- Type in "RD /s %windir%\softwaredistribution" (without quotations) and press Enter. Please press Y when you are prompted to remove the folder.

- Type in "RD /s %Windir%\System32\Catroot2" (without quotations) and press Enter. Please press Y when you are prompted to remove the folder.

WARNING: Please do not remove the folder "Catroot" which is a system folder.

5. Please also browse to C drive and delete the folder WUTEMP. If you cannot see the folder, please click start, run, type in "cmd" and press Enter. After the DOS command window pop-ups, please type in "RD /s C:\wutemp" and press Enter to delete the folder.

Step 2: Reset the permission of the local hard drives.

========================================

1. Click Start, click Run, type "%windir%\help" (without quotation marks) and press Enter to open the Help folder.

2. Click Start, Run, type "%windir%\system32" (without quotation marks) and press Enter to open the System32 folder.

3. Open the attachment secedit.zip, copy and paste the file secedit.exe into the folder System32; copy and paste the file secedit.htm into the folder Help.

4. Click Start, click Run, type the following command and then press ENTER.

secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose

Important: The command is complicated, therefore I suggest you copy and paste the above command into the Run box.

After running the command, you will receive a "Task is completed" message, and a warning message that something could not be done. You can safely ignore this message.

For detailed information about this command, we may refer to this article:

sounds to me like a bunch of services are disabled. look for any disabled services that you may have turned off and turn on and start.

in safe mode now, there is no file secedit.zip or secedit.htm

ok, Sorry my file might be only for x64 only i can upload it if you like?.

Other things it could be Firewall Anti Virus programs.

Thanks for everyones help, unfortuanetly, in the mist of doing all this crap, i lost the whole panel at the bottom of the screen that has the start button on it. And i could not open anything up on the desktop. So, even though i didn't want to, i just did a system recovery where it saved all my downloaded stuff to a file called My old disk structue, then rebooted the factory settings. It solved the Windows update problem, but now i can't get any files out of my old disk structure. It keeps telling me access denied.

The part i am on about ( Post 11 ) all so check post 14.
Please try this: Log on to the computer with an administrator user account. Right-click the Chris folder, then click the Advanced button of Chris Properties and see if "Encrypt contents to secure data" is checked. If it is, click on the checkbox to remove the checkmark, and wait for Windows to apply the changes, and then restart your computer and try to access the contents of the chris folder.
