Wireless Bridged Network

I have been having some problems with a few new devices I received recently, and I figured the the best plan of action is to extend my network.

The problem I am having is I don't know how or what is required to do this. My plan is to have two locations relay back to a central router with connects to the internet.

It would look like this:

router(bridge? not sure of terms) -> wireless connection -> central router <- wireless connection <- router(bridge)

the central router is connected to the internet, where the two other routers(bridges?) are connected wireless to the central router.

The idea is to have devices connected to the two end routers via Ethernet cords.

what do I need to do to achieve this layout? Thanks!

It should work. Just connect to the central router first to confirm the line is working, then one of the bridges (with a cable) to set up the access point.

Not all wireless devices are routers, they are access points primarily. You want to put those access points in bridge mode instad of router. Some access points support wireless roaming, using that you'd have only a single wireless network (using 2 different SSID's is annoying for users).

it should also be noted that wireless bridges only work with WEP security (or no security) - so if this is in a high residential area, you really dont want to be using it.

Most times its easier and cheaper to just run a cable, or use homeplug tech instead.

did you just ask me if its wired wireless?



it uses electrical wiring in the house as ethernet cables, so while its slower than standard ethernet, it can be a lot faster than wireless (and a lot more reliable than wireless bridges)

the main advantage i guess, is that you can get higher speed than wifi (at least, higher than G - not sure about N) with no regards to distance, or walls etc in the way.

The homeplugs idea is good although they sometimes dont work in buildings with old wiring. Your other option is to buy a couple of access points that support WDS (Wireless Distribution System - its a method of wifi repeating) and use that, just make sure your wireless router and access points are the same make. If you go down the WDS route, its worth knowing that any retransmitted signal will be at half the throughput of the signal from the original router.
