I put together my HTPC finally and she's up and running great, but using a wired keyboard or mouse is difficult due to the location of the computer and available surface space around it.

I grabbed a cheap wireless keyboard/mouse combo from MicroCenter - I think it was a Logitech MK235 or some other low-end model. The mouse works well enough, I can use it from across the room (20ft away) without a hitch, the keyboard on the other hand sucks. I have to pretty much keep it within 2ft of the computer for it to work. I changed out batteries and tired multiple USB ports for the dongle, but no change. The keyboard sucks.

So, anyone have any good suggestions so I'm not running out and trying multiple wireless keyboards (and mice) to find something that works well? The HTPC is more than capable of playing any game, so perhaps something well suited for gaming should it come to down to using it for a decent gaming session from time to time. It would also be really nice to get some decent range (a good 10-15ft so you're not stuck right in front of the 50" TV) so you could sit back comfortably.

Logitech MK850. I have one, and it works wonderfully! Can be connected via USB or Bluetooth, and can also be used on multiple devices. I use mine at about 12 foot from the laptop its connected to.

I use the Microsoft Comfort 5050 Mouse and Keyboard set (actually, I like them so much, I have 3 sets). I easily get at least 25 feet out of mine.

If you only get about 2ft, then something is wrong. I doubt it is a design problem. More likely a defective unit.

Yeah, that's kind of what I figure about the keyboard. MicroCenter had a good stack of the same model marked as "Refurbished" - they were only $4 cheaper than a new one. I figured the company took advantage of a large selloff from Logitech for the refurbished ones (pennies on the dollar type of thing) and then marked them slightly less than the new models. I probably would have had better luck with a refurbished one. Anyway, I'm going to pitch the keyboard and keep the mouse. I can just rely on the cheap wired keyboard for a little while until I feel like ordering up something better.

Guess that goes to show me what I can expect to get for only spending $19 (before tax) on a wireless keyboard/mouse set.

Logitech K400 and never looked back. Has some great features. Desktop button located at f1 and a left click button on the left side for your left hand

K830 if you want to just spend more

MK850 if you absolutely have to have a detached mouse
