According to Neowin Google might be allowing you to pay monthly for a chrome notebook, this includes hardware upgrades etc.

According to our source, Google plans to make the notebooks available for $10-$20 a month per user, and will provide hardware refreshes as they are released as part of the package, and will replace faulty hardware for the life of the subscription. On top of this, Google will make the devices available for a one time payment as a normal retailer would, but is likely to not distribute the devices directly. Instead, the company will distribute them in a fashion similar to the way Android is distributed.

What i want to know is would anyone at TPU be willing to pay for a notebook on a monthly contract?

Currently paying for a notebook monthly is only possible along with a mobile phone contract and leaves you with a low spec laptop after paying a lot of money, but $10-$20 a month for a laptop which will be replaced if broken for the length of the contract and upgraded to the latest hardware sounds like a really good deal.

this means that for the price of a netbook every 2-3 years you can get a laptop that will automaticly be upgraded to the latest spec and replaced if it breaks.

I never do payment plans with hardware. Hardware drops in price too fast and you end up with an ongoing payment for somethign that's outdated. When you pay full price, you can sell the outdated item. when you have a payment plan you can't or end up not having the item and still paying on it.

but isn't this taken out of the equation since google have offered to upgrade the laptop for you?

No, period.

IMO, I am so sick and tired of these companies and their monthly blood sucking fees/subscriptions... you, usually will end up paying triple for the product.

You might as well go to Rent-A-Center and get one.

i understand that, i just saw that it works out at $120 a year, and at that price it sounded like a good deal for a laptop, its not even a netbook, it has a 12 inch display (alright its small, but not netbook sized) and its got wi-fi and 3g built in, basicly a mobile broadband contract where you don't have to pay extra for the laptop

12" is netbook size to me and most Americans.

It really depends on the contract terms. Noting that it's google, it'll probably suck your blood at night and sell it to advertisers. :D

Eh, probably not. The laptop is pretty good, but I like my computers being able to do more than just web based activities. Plus, the ones they supplied pilot users need a serious hardware update in my opinion (which I know they'll cover if you rent), as it fails to play high quality video.

Hmmm make sure you read the invisible ink fine print before signing anything... ;)

^^^ This is the whole key to whether it's a good deal or not.

Simple questions come to mind like ...
After a certain period of time do I own it?
Can I cancel the contract without paying an outrageous termination fee (and send the notebook back)?
Does OC'ing it void the warranty?

Nobody wants you to own anything anymore... all they want you to have is a license to use it that says they can take it off you at any time without compensation.

Perhaps it could be a help for poor students?

In Denmark we have http://www.leasy.dk/computer/baerbar.aspx
Price for a 10" Notebook is $20/month, a HP 17" $37/month...

And on this site we can rent one on a daily basis, only $97 for a week! Or $214 for a month...

But can't really vote in this poll... it needs a fourth choice: "No thanks, notebooks leaves me cold" :D

I wouldn't pay for open source

Yes I would if they'd do it the right way. Most likely terms will scare you away tho.
One thing about this would be annoying (an I think it will fail because of this): the constant nagging from google about updates, new features, schedule of hardware updates etc.
Still If they store everything in a cloud it has a chance. 10 bucks and you wont hear wife nagging about software/hardware issues.
