Hello. I recently ordered an XFX 8800GS from newegg, and heard that the fan was loud and uncontrollable.

I have a question - Since I have an Nvidia 7900GS (also XFX), can I take the fan from that card (controllable), and replace it with the one in the 8800GS? Any replies would be greatly appreciated.

It might fit, when you get it try to line up the screws on the bottom to see if they line up.I just put a Zalman VF700 CU on my 8800GS

I read on new egg someone put a Zalman on their 8800GS, and when I looked on the supported cards list of that model, the 7900GS was on there too. Does this mean the 7900 fan will work on the 8800?

As long as it don't break any diodes or anything it might, you will have to take both off to see.good idea anyway, that way you can put fresh thermal paste on it.

like dwax said, as long as the screw holes line up you should be alright... just proceed with caution

Hello :)

I own a XFX 8800 GS O/C and i've changed the cooler by a Zalman VF 900.
It's amazing : no noise !
The Zalman has multi holes for several cards.
I think that 7900GS is compatible.

However, the stock 7900GS cooler is not very interesting for the 8800 Gs XFX, because this card has just a two pins conector ... no adjustment possible ( always at max ).

The stock XFX full copper cooler :

First stage : stick the memory heat sinks and new thermal paste ( ArticSilver Ceramic ) :

Note that the kit contains 8 pieces ... we need 6 pieces. So, we can use the extra two for power stage cooling.

The VF 900 back ... great mirror :D

The kit in place ... nice looking no ? ... so better ...

Results @ 730 core / 1000 memory / 1728 shaders :
Before : 50°C idle, 79°C full.
After : 39°C idle, 52°C full

VF-700 does good also, i run without ram sinks

UPDATE: got my 8800GS XFX (normal version).

First of all the box was squished on one of the corners, and the anti static Video card bag had a small (but noticable) hole in its side (wtf?) luckily the card is 100% ok.

Put the card in before changing its fan to see if it worked. Turns out the fan is not nearly as loud as people made it sound. Its definatly louder than my 7900GS but far from "Im deaf in one ear as im typing this". So i decided to not mess around with the fan.

I was a bit scared, since im using a dell dimension 8400 with stock PSU (350w) and wasnt even sure if pcie was v1.1. However everything worked, and no problems with power supply after doing some graphics intense stuff (benchmarks, Cod4, !CRYSIS!). I even overclocked it and still no problems.

As for overclocks, I did a quick one and Im at 725 Core / 1000 Memory, 100% stable. It failed me a 750 core, tried 1050 memory (max allowed on rivatuner) and still perfectly stable, but id rather not go over 1000. Awesome overclocks IMO. After OC its 54C idle and 76C after crysis. Much better than my 7900GS which was 62C Idle and over 96C after something like Crysis!

All in all a awesome improvement over my 7900GS, and for only 130$ is almost too good to be true! :p

which 7900GS u had?

A bit weird how XFX still stuck on thermal pads in the place where they removed two of the ram chips.

Good to hear yours is doing it's job.
I bought the 8800GT with the VF830 and it hits 95degC then locks up, even after reseating.
Doesn't take very long either depending on the game being played.

Even if you put the 7900GS fan on the 8800GS, it still would not be controllable. You need the third wire for the fan to be controllable. Since the connector on the 8800GS is only a 2-pin it won't ever be controllable, no matter what fan you put on it.

ah i see. but thats odd. my 7900GS fan is 2 wired and i could control it...

yea true, but here is something i tried and it worked, just need to get a sodering iron now.

Took the stock eVga 7950GT HSF that i still had laying around plugged it in the 8800GS fan spot and there is a third place for the thrid wire, its just not sodered in, so i touched a piece of wire to that spot, and i had fan control. Anyone willing can gain fan control with a 3 pin fan and a little pin from a broken part like a jumper goes on, just soder it into place and remove the little white cage around the plug

I always thought that the third wire typically seen on fans is actually just for RPM detection. The fan speed is usually controlled by changing the voltage on the red wire.

That is true for case fans, but on the 8800GS(and other video cards) the third wire is actually a PWN wire, which controls the fan speed(sort of like the 4th wire on CPU fans these days).

I thought that was kind of odd also. However, I noticed they have a few 8800GT's that uses the same heatsink. So they probably just manufacture the heatsink in bulk for both the cards with the thermal pads and paste pre-applied, then just stick it on the cards. If it is going on a 8800GS then the thermal pad for the two missing ram chips goes unused.

@TItus
where did you connect the zalman if the vga has only a 2 pin connector?
i also have this board, i'm interested a solution for the luod fan noise, yours its nice but i've have some doubts on compatibility.
thank you , bye

You can either connect the Zalman to a motherboard header or use a 2 pin to 4 pin Molex converter.

so you think ther is no problem if i connect the zalman to the mobo NB_fan connector,
that it's free.
thank you, newbie in this thinghs :)

did it, perfect, a lot more silent (not top but enough to sleep with the pc on) :)
very useful the fan mate 2

thankyou all. bye!

Hi:)

I've connected yhe fan on the " power fan " plug on my mobo. Its voltage is not regulated by the mobo, so, no problem with temp.
The fanmate 2 is a good thing but the VF900 isn't loud in my rig so i did't connect it.
