Whatever happened to XMS Pro RAM? The last desktop I built (with the original DDR XMS Pro) had LEDs that were not only one of the coolest looking parts of the case, but some of the most useful lights I've ever used- almost more useful than the HDD light. I've done research and all I've seen is XMS2 Pro RAM with LED's. No XMS 3, no high-end models of them (DDR2 1066, etc), and I've never heard of another company that does the LED thing. I would literally trade the overclocking capability for these LED's but I need DDR3, and I don't want to sacrifice TOO much clocking power. If anyone knows of a company that kept the RAM activity light idea alive, please let me know. Or if there is an alternative (maybe external LED like right under the hard drive light on a case) that reacts in real-time (unlike some stupid LEDs on flash drives and hard drives that just blink when they're under load but don't tell you EXACTLY when they are working, just give you a general idea) I'd really love to know about it. Thank you

Fact of Cost, Also the last LED ram i seen was bulky from them, also i learned that the LEDs do run hot.

Fact of Cost? and I don't know, the XMS and XMS2 have the same form factors I'm pretty sure and they're just as bulky as any other RAM with heatspreaders, actually a lot thinner/shorter than high-end overclocking RAM. But no one knows of RAM with activity lights like them?

Yeah, the whole crucial ballistix 'tracer' lineup. They are high performance DDR2 and i think they have DDR3 now. They have leds that flash faster when the ram is being used more. Not quite as useful as the LEDs on the old XMS pro, but still pretty good and also look cool.

That XMS PRO gave me one of the biggest bang for my buck on my 939 rig. It was the shit! The fast attack LED's were way cooler than my Tracers imo. I bought the 2x1 kit for about 230.00, then sold it 2 years later for 335.00!

Yeah it kinda sucks, gaming rigs have veered away from sweetass looks for straight performance now. 3 graphics cards do look intimidating, but where's the style? Even the logos are covered by the ones above them. And RAM is just a spiky, big stick now. Hopefully Corsair comes out with some XMS3 RAM by the time I build my system, but if not this Tracer Ballistix stuff looks pretty cool. I just don't know about the practicality of the lights. Supposedly they "chase" each other, and pulsate faster or slower, but always pulsate whether they're being used or not...that's not too cool. I like the Underglow blue lights though. Has anyone used these before, and can you tell me if they really let you know anything? Thanks guys

After you have had them a while, you will get used to what the leds are going to do through boot ect. There is some order to them lighting. They look retro to me,...like the old big computer lights in the 60's movies. I still like the older fast attack style.

Ahh I see, you're talking about Ballistix right? Yeah I just saw a demo of them, that is kind of cheesy. I used to be able to diagnose problems and see if dual channel was running with my XMS Pro's. Looks like I'm gonna wait for them, that Tracer stuff just doesn't look right.

People like me don't care about looks at all. Most hardcore tweakers and bench junkies don't. Half of use don't even run in cases. (I don't) I personally wouldn't care if everything still used ugly green pcbs with white slots, so long as it performed.

After all, I'm here to use my computer to it's potential, not stare at it in the case.

PS: Not trying to say looks are bad, or anything. Just offering a point of view.

That can be said for just about all sectors of life,...from cars to women.

eh then yall don't have standards.

I'm the same with cars. I don't even care if they're dented and have 7 different colors of primer on them, as long as it's fast.

:toast: U got it.

I am definitely not like that in any way. Style is a must. I have 2 67 Mustangs, one with an L6 and another with a 289. They both get more looks than a Viper, and only one can really move when I want it to. I can get smoked by a Corolla in my 6, but who cares? I despise "primer" cars, or massive trucks with nice engines, or any other ugly-but-powerful vehicle. It's easy to get power if that's all you care about, keeping it stylish is totally different. But the point is, people remember looks. Everyone knows when I'm around, even the most ignorant people see it's a nice car. If you go to a guy's house and see an unbelievably cool case that happens to perform well too, you're more likely to remember that and say "I want it" than you are seeing an ugly exposed motherboard that's 10% faster. I broke records with my last system, and I do say it looked quite nice too. There's nothing wrong with a healthy balance of looks AND performance. It's like a disproportioned bodybuilder, or a butterface girl, they've got some very nice qualities, but the bad ones almost take it all away. Plus, anyone can have a monster computer with money and creativity, but not everyone has a beautiful monster that performs the same.

Anyway, has anyone else tried out Tracers?

People also remember that rusted out shit box that blew their doors off, too. I'd rather be infamous for my car than popular for it.

I'm afraid i would go for substance over looks anyday, looking good is a bonus.

I don't know, you see a lot more beasty cars driving down the street than you do exotic ones. I mean if you think about it, the F-series and Silverado's have tons of power stock.

No Silverados and F-150's don't have a ton of power stock. If you think that, you've never been in a truly fast car.

I'm talking I like cars that look like a rusted out shitbox, but smoke brand new Z06 Vettes. AKA: A sleeper.

So let me ask you this, if you see a shitty, little, beat up, unpainted Cavalier completely smoke a Z06 Vette, which car are you going to take the most notice of?

the way the Economy is going tho, those models may disappear for a few years until The COmpanies Finally Release Something that Does 30 MPG yet has the Same HP as the 20 MPG Vehicles. Also IMHO buying a Hybrid that does only a few miles better than the regular engine counterpart is waste of money.

Well first of all no, I haven't been in a truly fast car before, sorry I don't have tons of money to waste on my drivetrain. But I have been in better looking cars than you may ever see, and own some of them. So I buy a car for $2500 that gets more noticed than a several-hundred-thousand-dollar Porsche, of course it can't outrun it, but who's gonna be remembered? The guy with the run-of-the-mill rich guy Porsche or the guy with that ultra-rare classic car? And to answer the Z06 vs Cavalier question, first I hate ricers (but I do prefer sleepers over full-fledge ricers), but I also hate Chevy so that's a double-negative on the Cavalier. I'd remember the Cav but I would NEVER want either of them. If I had to choose though, I'd take the Vette if it was given to me. And a buddy of mine's 06 Silverado 1500 rips apart Cobra's stock, so I'd consider that power. But for the tons of power thing, yeah they do. Big block V8's that do nothing but guzzle gas fit into empty truck frames for the purpose or towing or hauling can push some power out if you step on them. Maybe they're not 10 or 11 second vehicles but they run.

It's just difference of opinion man, I take style over power. Power is a huge thing, I'm a 60's muscle guy, of COURSE power's a big thing to me (I actually have a big explanation to why I hate modern cars that try to raise the power bar that was set by cars 40 years ago), but you can make any car on earth powerful, you can only choose the body once. And if you're saying "rusted out shitbucket" like the owner traded the looks for power, seeing as how building a car up takes PLENTY more money than having it look good naturally, that trade doesn't work.

I know we're off-topic but my question's already been answered for the most part, thanks for the help guys

Naturally looking good is one thing. Now, that's purely a matter of opinion, like you said. If I had a choice of 2 cars on the same budget, both with the same power/weight ratios, and both fit my needs perfectly, of course I'm gonna pick the one that looks better. But if my car choices limited me to one that looks good, but is slow or one that looks crappy, but is built to be fast, either for the same cash outlay, I'll pick the fast one any day(so long as looking crappy doesn't mean it's falling apart structurally).

Now, when it comes to spending money on a car already owned, it's speed mods all the way. For the money one can spend on a good paint job, I can buy a new rotating assembly, or a power adder, etc., etc.

Same logic is applied to computers for me.

Hey, if you want ram with LED's then get some Crucial Ballistix Tracers. But I did see some ram that had the LED screen that you could mount onto the ram. I forgot were I saw it, and what brand.

heres my beef on Ram with LEDs, the LEDs do run hot, I had Tracers myself and it discolored some spots on the ramslots themselves.

I just say if you buy a car on the spot, you can't make it look good eventually if it's ugly to begin with. You can ALWAYS make it powerful when you have the money though, anytime you want.

I think you're talking about XMS Xpert RAM maybe? It has a giant LED display on each stick, but I haven't heard of them since DDR and they were pretty clumsy looking. I hear Ballistix uses really high-quality chips so it can still overclock as high as possible, but I still don't know, XMS Pro LED's are just so practical and cool looking. It's like case lighting with an excuse for being there.
