Does anyone know if Microsoft released a micro code through Windows updates to prevent non-k cpu from overclocking? I know Intel has released a micro code in the lastest manufactures' boards. I am getting a Z170 board here soon and I know where to get the overclocking bios to revert to in order to allow overclocking for non-k cpu's. But if Microsoft released an update to stop this also, then things get a little tougher.

Save from the mobo ( if possible ) and other PC parts and get a K CPU .
Yes, that is easy. But I already have a Z97 board with a 4790k in it. I do not need a k cpu. I am building a budget computer for testing. I bought a G4400 cpu along with a Asus Z170-P-D3 board and I have the bios for the board that allows me to overclock that G4400. But, if Microsoft released a micro code update, then this will be tough since I like to keep my systems up to date. Later I may upgrade the CPU, but for now all I want is to overclock that cpu to heat it up and test several thermal pastes for a project :)

I disabled "Windows Update" service on my Windows 10 . Now , from 2nd August , Windows Anniversary update is coming , so I am going to temporarily enable the service in order to get the update .

This trick might help

no offense but you are good with this:

ASUS Z170-P D3 Non-K OC BIOS

Support for BCLK Overclocking of CPUs like i3-6100, Pentium G4400, i5-6400, i7-6700 and all other non-K CPUs.

Don’t use this for K-series CPUs.
It might damage your hardware, no guarantees provided.

Issues found so far

  • No IGPU
  • No dynamic change of CPU frequency
  • No C-states
  • No Turbo Mode
  • CPU temperature reading is incorrect
  • AVX instructions have very low performance
  • Windows XP ACPI not supported
After flashing set the following settings to make it boot into OS with correct CPU speed

AdvancedCPU Configuration
- Boot Performance Mode -> Turbo Performance

AdvancedCPU ConfigurationCPU Power Management Configuration
- Intel(R) SpeedStep(tm) -> Disabled
- CPU C states -> Disabled

but ya have bad feelings if the latest microcode is not there?
normally the newest codes are only in modbios
Thanks for sharing, though I already knew all of this. However, Microsoft did release a micro code patch as an update for the Intel G3258 and non "Z" motherboards.
