Well, I for one think that smileys provide another form of communication that represents the loss of us being able to talk face-to-face. Many times I have seen a couple of well placed smileys put the statement you just made into the correct context. The person reading it may not understand your sarcasm, but a smiley can avoid a flame war....

Smileys are a replacement for being face-to-face, or really knowing the person you are posting too. It helps them understand who you are....
Similes also transcend language. I can say
in many languages, but I just have to say it once, in this form

ALL understand.

This smiley may explain it better? In Dutch, German, Greek, Russian, Arabic, Korean, All kinds of Chinese? In Latin?
And yes, two of my favorite XS smileys have creeped into my post. I vote for these two to be added to the list.....
