Has anyone seen frame rates in the mid 50's using a 5870 at stock in Dirt 2 at 1920, 4xaa in game, 16xAF using CCC, DX11 in the Malaysia track? I've never seen it as it's usually much higher (depending on the track). But I've never seen frame rates averaging the mid 50s. As a matter of fact I've never seen mins in the 50's.

Ok, I asked in the tpu review thread, but with the current clustefudge that's going on in that thread, my question was skipped over.

Ok, my question, 480 or 5870? Power consumption and heat are absolutely non-issues for me, as I have a 1250w psu, and I water cool. I do quite like some of the available CUDA apps as well, but they aren't 100% necessary.
Option 1
480 make sure you get Life Time Warranty period. If not don’t buy.
480 will keep u Water cooling system warm/hot for other components.:twitch:
Option 2
HD 5870 1GB, costs cheaper and already proved itself for being power efficient and bloody fast. ATI getting better with driver 10.3 and more to come. Just OC the card with water cooling.;)

I was looking forward to some really nice performance stats on the GTX 480. But i was really dissapointed on NVIDIA because they only got some few % better performance on a brand new chip over the HD5870 card that is half a year old while consuming alot more power and being much much hotter and on top of that sounds like a jet plane:banghead:

And i mean wow, that's kinda fail. Sorry NVIDIA, you wont get any money from me for long long time again.

And when you think about it to, the HD 5990 that will soon come out will totally smoke the GTX 480 in everything. Yeah hurray, NVIDIA will have the fame for like a month or so.

The HD 5990 will probably cost a little more than the GTX 480, but it will still kick the GTX 480's butt into oblivion in performance while still being more silence, consume less power, does have a much lower temprature on the GPU and so on.

Remember, when you get a graphic card that gets up to like 95-100 degrees celcius, then the graphic card is not the only thing that gets hot. Everything inside the computer case will get really really hot. And that's not directly good for the other components.

Sometimes, my normal harddrive(s) use to go nuts when they get to hot. They gets really really slow and the OS just starts to do strange things. Things wont load and the OS sometimes wont start up and so on. And this is when it's summer here in Norway where i live.

How hot do you think the computer case will get inside with a SLI setup with the GTX 480?. I don't want to know it. I don't want to know what would happen to my harddrives to.

And not only that, but if you want SLI with the GTX 480, you need a damn nuclear power plant to run them. No thanks. The electrical bills here in Norway is high enough as it is.

GTX 480 is also more like a jet plane. It's really noicy, so that's a BIG minus for me.

So for me, the the choice is really easy. I rather take the HD 5990 when it comes out and pay more for it to get the best performance and have much lower power consume / temprature on the GPU, and on top of that is much more silence.

The only thing the new GTX cards have that is intresting is the Tesselation. And that's it, that's the only thing that intresting for me with the new GTX cards.

I just found a review which has great greatly favours the GTX 480 despite its limiting efforts to defeat ATI. I dont believe it my eyes when I see this.

They benchmark GTX 480 SLI vs. HD 5970 with the HD 5970 blowing the doors off the 480's SLI setup and in the last page "Power, Temp & Sound" they withheld the HD 5970 information and instead replace with HD 5870 Crossfire  They didn't do any benchmark with HD 5870 crossfire vs. GTX 480 SLI, they only use HD 5970. Something not right with this website. I think they get paid by Nvidia or they are NvidiaBOTS:eek:

Look at Dirt 2 & Bad Company 2 benchmarks, HD 5970 vs. 480 SLI, the ATI kills the SLI setup but he says nothing positive about ATI. But once 480 wins by a little he goes crazy about it and he make sure it’s emphasised in this writings. Talk about bias that so easy to see.

If ATI win no problem and if Nvidia win no problem, but state the obvious don't hide ATIs positive benchmark results.

I just checked using fraps and with that setup and track (Malaysia) I averaged 71FPS. How the :wtf: are they getting frame rates averaging in the mid 50s???

nt300,
Yeah, I noticed how they switched up like that. They benchmarked with the 5970 which uses lower clocks then a 5870 CF. But used that 5870 to test power, noise and heat. Which are based on the higher clock rate and the fact that it uses more power. However, the review clearly showed ATI's solution to be far better.

yeah that makes no sense... the 5870 CFX is also clocked 100Mhz higher than the 5970 :wtf: so if they did use it, it would be much closer than a 5970.

I don't think so. They were up front with disclosing their testing criteria and explained things clearly enough. If you read their review in full, it isn't that favorable to nvidia anyway. I don't think that an NvidiaBOT woud say:
"The only thing that "blew us away" was the heat coming out of the video card and the sound of the fan."

Does anybody else think that the retail GTX 470s and 480s will be 'the same' as these early ones being reviewed? As far as I know, Video card manufacturers generally send the best performing GPUs of the batch and hand picked for other good qualities to review sites, especially if the sort of card that have NDA agreements attached to it. Will we see any variance you think with cards sent to reviewers and the rest sent to retailers?

Just one question regarding your latest (& last for now) GTX 480 & 470 review : WHY ? Why you used 800Watt PSU ? Other than that i am happy camper. :) Guess i don't have to sell/rebate my Corsair HX1000W PSU afterall. Plus i agree with few TPU Forums members bout 480 SLI vs 5970 issue, unless you intentionally pitted 480 in SLI vs this card (5970) since the later is actually 2 GPUs in CF in single package. lol

P.S. Unlike the HardOCP's review you didn't settled on DX11 only titles, which is great. What is not so great is the exclusion of one DX11 title which is AvP 2010 (AvP3) - hope when the April comes (April 26 i think is the day when launch partners will mass produce the cards to the PC market) you will include benchmarks based on this game in all it's DX11 glory.

P.P.S. Forgot - did you included the Unigine DX11 Heaven 2.0 benchmark ?

There is some headroom for driver improvements, but overall, the new GeForce cards are dissapointing. Sure they are slightly faster, but they also heat more, they are noisy, eat tons of electricity and cost more. Oh and yoou can't buy one because there isn't one in stock.
How crappy can it be? Where are the days when we got a proper GeForce cards in our hands and then we were all cheerful for next month or so throwing everything possible at them and look pretty numbers and nice graphics. It's just not happening anymore. WHY NVDIA, WHY!?!??!?!?
Well first off, there is no sense in pumping up the stock. People wont buy them anyways :nutkick:

I bet youd get 78 with the fermi on your setup.. with higher power draw. lol XD

Well first off, there is no sense in pumping up the stock. People wont buy them anyways :nutkick:
Like it or not there are people who will buy such card even if it is 5% faster. :shadedshu
You know there are people who can afford to flush their shitter with expensive wine.

So... anyone have a Fermi yet? I should say has there been anyone on the planet who has actually bought one retail yet?

Wassup ? :)

As for the question : will do, but only after 8th in August, hope there will be one with custom cooling+the prices should definetelly drop by then. Or maybe GTX 485 if such monster will be released soon. :)

The GTX 480 dropping price?

I dont think so..........

Im pretty sure by the stocks of the cards, and how high nvidia seemed to be forced to put the price tag on at 499. Seems like they really couldn't sell it at a lower price. The 480 makes me sad for sure:shadedshu.

Has anyone else tried their 5870 stock in Dirt 2's Malaysia and seen 56 FPS average? I get 71 using 1920, 4xAA, 16xAF (AF using CCC).

You should try GPU-z also just for fun & see if the card reach 100% in the games if it's only reaching 70-85% then the 5870 still got more power to give...:D

The reason why I'm asking is because this review says that Fermi gets 62 FPS at 1920 while 5870 only get 56. The 5870 results simply isn't true (at least for me). So I have to wonder where they got those results from? A i7 860 at 4.0GHz should be ample enough to provide higher frame rates then what I'm getting on my setup.
