well for 5000$ limit why not?

Well, a 5,000$ limit doesn't necessarily require spending all of it I think. A Gulftown adds nothing at all for gaming.

Edit: Wait, where did the 5k limit come from ? All I see is 2k in the OP.

LOL yea. personall you should just go for a standard I7 920 setup with 2x 5850s or 5870s and overclock it.

theres no real need to go for 5000$

Also, don't buy the Vapor-X card if you'd like to overclock that card. It's a non-reference PCB, so you will not be able to adjust the voltage. Also, if you are anywhere near a Micro Center, you can snag a 920 for under $200

Also, to add, the thermaltake supply you have in your OP MB, is more than enough. Heck I am 95% sure it's the same OEM (CWT) as the corsair linked/pictured previously.

EDIT:

Could also cut down to an i7 930, it's truly not much slower in terms of performance.

i7 920s are now sold out at MC, all is left is the 930 at 199.99$ :p

To answer one of the OP's questions: No the Phenom II 965 is the 1/3 of the "speed" of the i7 920 , but i7 920 is quite poweful compared to the Phenom indeed

Agreed.
Over clocking is only as dangerous as you make it. There are many guides here on TPU that will walk you through it step by step. If you dont over clock, get the fastest cpu you can afford and be done with it. Good luck. :toast:

It could be enough, but with such a large budget why not pay extra for a velvet bag? Plus just because it's manufactured by the same company doesn't mean the quality is the same, each company has its own standards that the OEM has to adhere to. Not to mention Corsair's warranty.. :p

well for 5000$ limit why not?

That's not how much I'm allowed to spend. That's how much I would like to spend. Hypothetically.

Is the Phenom II X4 965 BE only 1/3 as fast as the Ci7 at any clock speed?

Why do you say that the Ci7 960 is a waste of money? I have ZERO experience in overclocking, if I had the proper knowledge, I would get a 920 or 930, then overclock it as much as I could.

The i7 960 has a 3.2 GHz stock clock speed. If I'm not in the business of overclocking, I'm going to have to pay for higher clock speeds.

I might be able to go to $2,000 or maybe $2,100.

I've answered your Phenom II vs i7 question already. No.
You don't need any overclocking experience, everyone needs to start somewhere.
If you really hate to overclock then go for the 960. Obviously you'll have to sacrifice some other components to make up for the money wasted but you'd still end up with a decent rig.

Let me ask you this, what is the purpose of this computer?

I could sit you down in front of a pc and my bet is you could not tell the difference between a 920 and a 960 in what ever program you chose to use. The answer is simple here...either you spend all the money you can or listen to some of these guys and get what you want for a lot less money. Plenty of help and advice here when needed.

+1 Was thinking that this morning

MB you never actually said what you want the PC for, as the Phenom may be perfectly adequate for you, i have used one and they are no slouches

Anyone on here will help you with overclocking, but my point is why spend $2000 when you may not need to, if all you do is internet and office stuff, then save the money, if its games then fair enough go wild, all im saying is think about fitness for purpose

exactly what i said this morning, i don't think he is here for advice, more just to say what he wants to get, otherwise if it makes more sense to spend less then her would do it like everyone else would

Okay lets stop bashing the guy about epenises and trolling. <- I probably contributed to that myself so I apologize.

He asked us what the best machine $5000 could net probably just out of curiosity, no need to bash the guy for that.

His main question is how much the components on post #1 would cost... which is a pretty weird question. He never told us where he's from, whether he wants to buy the parts second hand or brand new, or what the machine's main purpose was. Once we get that information we can really start helping the guy out... if he'll take our advice that is.

id happily advise, but we cant help him until he helps us.

MB, get the numbers out of your head, tell us what you want the PC for, what lifespan you expect, any limitations you have, once we have that then we can get you a PC athat may even save you some money, and like I said why spend extra money when there is no need, you are only going to regret it as you wont gain extra from it if it will still do your job for you
