GPU Upgrade....maybe.

I'm not sure Ill do this yet. (Wife hasn't given me the go) But I am thinking of upgrading my GPU. So this is where I am at.

6950 2gb + Dirt 3 (which I will OC)

or

570 (which chances are I won't)

What do you guys think is the better deal. I am leaning toward the 570.

Please no pissing contests or (AMD drivers suck) comments. They serve no purpose.

Any reason why other than for BFBC3? The 5850 is still good but is past its "sell by" date, so I am not sure what you will be doing to it once you start upgrading.

20+ FPS more in BC2 and a new GPU will have a higher resale when the 7000 comes out. If I dont move now the 5850 will be worth dirt by then. Savvy?

I would go for the 6950 because it performs within 5 fps of the 570 for 1920x1080 and it costs about $50 less in Newegg

Is a 6970 out of the question? On newegg the cheapest 570 is $20 less, but they have some models that are the exact same price.

No all are welcome. But most benches show the 570 out performing the 6970.

570 without a doubt man, BC2 and theoretically 3 will like it more than a 69xx. just grab a non reference one for sure, they OC like madness and are stonkingly fast cards up oiver 850 core.generally they get to or above stock GTX580 territory, something which even a 6970 has a hard time doing heavily oc'd.

definitely look at non reference for the best cards tho, I'd say your choice is one of these 3.

I am in love with my Gigabyte 570, 900mhz core, 4400mhz memory its wildly fast, but the cooler is so good it barely breaks a sweat doing it.

In my opinion 6950 and 570 are not in the same category. 570 competes with the 6970 and beats it by an insignificant margin at a lower price point. Now, the oveclocking potential of the 570 is great and it brings it close to 580 territory. But...

I have had a very unpleasant experience last week with the EVGA GTX570 SC, factory OCed to 797 core when out of the blue the driver stopped working, then things got worse and worse, artifacting and the whole combo which pointed to a dying card. Tried everything to no avail. As a last resort I took the card out, reseated it, brought down my humble 4.2Ghz overclock to stock and bam! The card is alive. Been doing some research and found out that I'm not the only one in this boat. Apart from people sending their cards back the fix is, belive it or not, a cold boot and reseat the card. How about that? The card is back to life everything is OK but don't know what to expect in the future.

Apart from that, the 570 is a great card and if you are not one of the "lucky" few who might experience something like this I recommend it. If we're talking about BFBC2 I can tell you that this card plays the game at 60FPS vsync locked on 1680x1050 all max and 32xCSAA.

So if you want to compare AMD vs. NVidia options then the 6950 is up against the 560Ti. The 570 is in another league albeit not by a huge margin.

Get the 6790 in crossfire.

The 6790 in crossfire often outperforms the GTX 570 and competes with the GTX 580 whilst being a crapload cheaper

You could even go 6850 crossfire for around the same price as a 570 if crossfire is an option. Or 6870's for a little more.

I see no reason to get either. Save money and get a 1gb 6950. 1gb is more than enough for 1920x1080 and I know what you use your computer for... unless you want to spend $100 dollars more for minimal performance gains. I would just keep the 5850 honestly.

And do you guys honestly believe that 6850 or 6790 will have any resale value when HD7000 comes out? Much more than HD5850 anyway? I really doubt it.

I'd go with a 570 because it's a good amount faster in BC2 and should last more and since Kepler will come later than AMD cards (or so I believe), Nvidia cards should keep a little more value I think.

How do you know AMD cards will not release this year tho? Are you 100% sure?
