8800 GTS Temps worrying

Hi guys. just installed a 8800 GTS (XFX 640MB XXX) and went and played TDU 2 with it whilst having gpu-z record temps. after a short while, checked the temps and saw a maximum of 96 c. weirdly GPU-Z also shows memory controller load always at 100%. and i've also done various sorts of clean ups and everything to the cooler and replaced the thermal paste. i'm also able to touch the thing without baking my fingers at full blast. and whilst gpu-z says now i'm idling at 72-73 c, It doesn't feel like it gets that hot.
what do you think?

something seems wrong, hows your case airflow? sure there isnt dust caked in the heatsink?

I've looked through the transparent-ish shroud, and there isn't any. I've removed both of case side panels and put a 80mm blowing to the gpu. now it says 69.

as you can see the GPU load-o-meter i'm not. running kombustor for about 5-10 seconds shoots the temps to 104! ridiculous.

If it's possible, you can try and stick it in a separate pc and do a clean os install.
I've had something similar happen when bought a gtx 285. When installed it would crash games at random intervals and memory controller would always be stuck at 100% load.
I i went berserk and did a reformat and poof everything works the way it should.
I'm not implying you should do the same, just a suggestion.

Added ; as for the temps, your heat sink might be at fault here too.

well if you're touching it and it is not hot (the card) then either
1. The temp sensor is wrong.
or
2. The heatsink is not making contact

Try to go back to really old drivers to see if something is going on there. Also, touching is not recommended but what are you touching exactly? the card PCB or the plastic shroud on the cooler?

tried with some 165.xx one. temps went higher by roughly 3 degrees. I'm able to touch the back of the card too and there's no smell of something that's about to go bang.
edit: just finished doing a quick os refresh (formatted the c drive as well). still nothing to report. all exactly the same.

I don't remember the clocks being that high on the 8800GTS 640MB. You have it OC'ed at all?

Don't get me wrong, these guys were pretty solid overclockers. You could easily pop all clock speeds up at least 100-150MHz without any issues. I used to run two of these and they OC'ed like champs - almost to an 8800GT performance level.

If that's the case, remove the overclock and see if that helps. I could be mistaken though since it's been about 3 years since I played with one of these.

No I haven't oc'd it. it's the pre-overclocked out of the box with these clocks. I double checked the heatsink and it's very clean.

Maybe I'm wrong, but 1600RPM seems slow for the fan running at 60%. Perhaps the fan is starting to go, maybe try taking it out and oiling the bearings.

It does ramp up to 100% at those kinda of load tempratures and it gets to about 2100 rpm i think.

That is still kind of low to me, I'd expect 100% to be in the 4000RPM range. But I could be wrong, it has been a while since I've had one of these G80 cards, so I can't remember if they had slower fans on them.

it's around 2000RPM, and my old 8800GTS (G80) works cooler than when i bought it, maybe it's a sensor issue. 60~70 new, 50~60 now when idle, and 80~90 new, 70~80 now when max

interestingly i've been googling it and found out it was a driver level bug that the memory controller was stuck at 99% and was causing the high tempratures. no fixes as of now. or at least i have not found any.

yeah sounds like driver issues.

The best thing to do is add a 80mm fan blowing into the intake (stick it onto the shroud using double stick tape), it will lower temps by a bit when the fan is at full RPMs.

As long as it games fine, I would not worry about it.

G80 cores were always hot, Mine in SLI got over 105deg gaming but never died.

LOL... the patented "Russian Return" :D
well I was going to keep it in the hope it won't go wrong but the man or woman or boy that I bought it from said he didn't want me to use it in that state. :banghead:

I know a lot of 8800GTS that died after ~3 years of good usage. Guy at RMA told me that all 8800 were bound to die someday cause of some design flaw.

EDIT: My experience and that opinion was for the 512MB one, sorry noticed now its the older one.

uhhhh?

What? How the F would they know if you used it in that state or not. It is your card now, you can use it however and wherever you want.

Get something higher if you can find it. the old G80 cores were good but have a lot of age on them now

I Know it might seem mad but I am looking for something in midrange performance category of 2008 (4770s, 9600s,...) to replace my 260. I had a Leadtek 9600 s-fanpipe and it had green PCB. and single slot cooler and it was lovely. and I mainly like the bottleneck to be on the GPU. I am funded enough to get a 560Ti or a 6870 but I don't like them at all. black pcb on everything nowadays...
