I am getting a 256GB 830 tomorrow and will be using it as my only drive.

1.) I plan to use MagicTune to check/update firmware, should I do this after I install Win 7 on the SSD? Or should I plug in my SSD and run it off my current HDD? (I also plan to use MagicTune at all times as it says Samsung recommends this)

2.) Should I follow the steps listed here in full even though I am using MagicTune?

Disable Index/page file/prefetch/superfetch... are these tips legit or harmful for us MagicTUne users? I already know to disable defrag, hibernate, and system restore. Thanks for any help. :toast:

This guide is a bit more in depth and just awesome; I've used it on several occasions.
http://www.overclock.net/t/1156654/seans-windows-7-install-optimization-guide-for-ssds-hdds

Many recommend not turning off page file; I've shrunk it pretty good.

I used the Magic utility that Samsung provides. It makes updating fw very simple.(I believe I updates fw both ways, as a secondary ssd and on my main OS rig while running OS) The program does some of the things with its "autotune" that the guides say to do anyway (I believe indexing, superfech, prefetch, but not pagefile). I never keep it running however, as I don't believe it's at all necessary.

The 830 however is a great drive; I have 2 and never any issues. My 2nd is used as a Steam drive and it's terrific. You're going to like it.

That's all I can think of right now

Mine 'should' be on the way in transit now.
Good to hear magictune is not something is which needed to run in the background.

Hey, you decided on the 830?! That's excellent news, you're going to love it, no doubt.

I jkust got the 128GB version. Don't do anything with the Magician software. There are no firmware updates, etc. Only thing you need to do is disable defrag on the drive. Everything else leave it alone. Dont disable prefetch, write caching, all that BS. Leave Windows alone.

How do you know your ssd ships with the latest firmware? I ordered mine in June and have since updated the firmware. I'd say it's silly to assume your drive ships with the latest fw imo.

Because I installed the Samsung Magician software and I had the latest firmware?

I'm not saying yours in particular. I'm saying, how would someone know other than using the software (edit: I suppose one of the other ssd utilities would tell you)? yours happened to have the latest, mine didn't before, theirs may or may not

Edit: Their site says the latest firmware was released in January, (ver.CXM03B1Q). I ordered one in march and one in june, neither of them had the latest firmware. There's a chance others may have it, while there is also a chance they may not have it.

I did my update FW/optimization after a fresh install of windows 7! It was quite seamless and did the FW update automatically with no fuss. I'm using the 830 as my OS drive with very minimal programs installed! And it is working great!

Cheers to all Samsung 830 users!
