will my psu handle a hd 3870?

the specs for a hd 3870 say 28a and the psu has dual 12v at 18a but considering all the stuff in my computer i just want to double check this.

hopefully i can get the psu before i get the card but just in case i need to know if it will.

well at 500W peak capacity, i will estimate that it can only do ~450W continously, and 36A max, can i estimate that i'll do about 30A in reality? and with those estimations, you should be able to pull it off since the 3870 isn't that power hungry, whats your 12v lead as of now?

honestly, yes it should work ok, but why spend all that money for an Antec TPQ 1KW? you should just get a quality ~$100 ~600W psu and be set

agreed, why not a pp&c 750W psu? it'll do you some good, loads of companies are going green so hopefully 750W will leave plenty of room for expansion once you get the 3870

I was thinking more Corsair 620HX...cheaper, modular, and still good quality
he's not going to need more the 620 even with 2x 3870s, that's the beauty in the new 3800 series, they use about as much power as a 1950Pro and I ran two of those with a q6600 + 3hdds and other stuff overclocked on my kingwin 600w

lol but you don't even see the PSU! it's stuck up hidden away in the case bro, who cares!
go for lower wattage quality, trust me
and honestly, unless you plan on crossfire with anther 3870, just get the corsair 520 it'll be plenty of power for what you have

Any of the new Corsair PSU's 550 watts and up, the UltraX 600 is the same thing as the Corsair 620w if you can find it cheaper. I know 2 people running Rosewill 750w PSU's with very power hungry systems and the Rosewills handle it like champs! I use a 550w with my system that has it's limitations but will OC my GTS as far as it wants. I shouldn't fail to mention the PCPower&Cooling 610. I've seen some insane deals on that PSU and it's rock solid.

Yes, that PSU "should" handle it, however...

...Some things to keep in mind;
Electronics are not "IDEAL". IF you get a PSU with the exact wattage you "need" then you will probably end up having to replace more than just the PSU, soon.
PSU's are the heart of your system, if your heart is always beating as fast as possable (to keep up with the demand) it won't last very long. The harder the PSU works the more heat it generates.

A PSU that supplies more power than you need works less hard and last longer.
Always pay attention to the power requirements of the GPU (in watts).

When Buying a NEW PSU, get the BEST, QUALITY PSU you can afford with MORE power than you "need". This allows room for future upgrades, and will give you better overclocks, smoother operation, and the PSU will last longer because it's not working so hard to supply the draw of your system.

i plan (hopefully) to buy a psu in December (i've been putting it off for months)
i want 750 watts just to "future proof" myself. even if i don't plan on crossfire i still would like to have the option with the power to do it if i decided to.

I REALLY want moduler because my case is kinda hard to cable manage so less cables the better. I also don't want to spend more than $200.

dont know y every1 and their mother want 750w+ psu. for most systems its simply overkill IMO.

pc p&c now make a line of psu's for OCZ IIRC.

anything from those two manufacturers is shure to be good.
