Was reading around and didn't see anyone one mention anything about the psu. I mean it might be enough but if you had an extra one laying around it wouldn't hurt to try right, and doesn’t the 4870 need a 6pin and 8pin to power it up. Hopefully that could help!!

Not to insult, but did you bother cleaning your NV drivers first?

We just troubleshot a gent a couple days ago wheo was having the EXACT same issue?

Yea, I actually formatted my drive and re-installed Vista just to make sure there were no traces of nvidia dirtying up my performance.

Just a reference, here's what I got on lightsmark with my 88gt

and here's what I get with my 4870:

I doubt it's the PSU, AMD recommend a 500W quality one and mine's a 620W Corsair. Both the 6+6 pin connectors are plugged in too.

Could you take a screenshot of your device manager? You may want to check out your event viewer located under "administrative tools" in the control panel.

I've just ran furmark and it seems on par with the other 4870's
mine:

twicksisted's for comparison:

So at least that's something, guess it's not a hardware issue with the actual card.

I'm still confused though lol

Ouch :(

I've seen your method, in a post and i had even thanked you and had bookmarked it ... until i re-installed, as well, and found that my bookmarks, which i usually save in a file for when i re-install, were not up to date ...

Your method is quite thorough (sp?), from what i remember reading.

I wasn't sure, as i said. Thank you for confirming my fears ...

I don't have time to read the rest of the thread, so someone might have said something. If you use Firefox, grab the Foxmarks add-on! It allows you to synchronize your bookmarks between any computer you use that uses Firefox and stores them on their server. You can even set them to sync from your own server if you don't want to fool with theirs. It's INCREDIBLY useful if you have to go between a laptop, desktop, and campus computer labs!

Get rid of that ati tool driver.

Done that, made no difference. Just tried playing Crysis at 1680x1050, no AA, all high and it was laggy as hell, worse than my 8800GT. I feel absolutely gutted. I've sent a message to AMD tech support and hopefully they'll have the answer, otherwise it's RMA time.

I'm in your boat, seeing little difference at all in some games. This is coming from an 8800gs!

I feel for ya, guy! I've just been trying CSS and it's stuttering worse than Gareth Gates and getting as low as 20 FPS on zombie servers which is ridicularse.

Definately gonna RMA it. I can't believe I paid £10 for Saturday delivery when they might as well delivered as bag of burning dog shit on my door step, it would have been less stress full than a £200 diappointment.

Guess I'm gonna have to pop my old 8800GT back in and cry myself to sleep.

Hope you get yours working! :):toast:

EDIT: May I ask what are the rest of your system specs, SirJangly?
If they're similar to mine, could be something conflicting, quite unlikely though.

Just thought I'd ask on an off-chance that they were exactly the same as mine lol

Looks like we just got bad cards I guess.

You gonna RMA yours?

Could it really be that our cards our bad? I suspected that, but wasn't sure of the chances...I bought mine at best buy to try it out. I have about 3 more weeks and can return it without a restocking fee :) lol

Since furmark is based solely off of your card and the score seems to be right, I think that your card isn't the problem.

dude... my card is absolutely amazing... plays games fantasticly... guess what my lightsmark score is: 264!!!

so basically if the benchies are right, your cards working better than mine.
theres nothing wrong with your card by the looks of things and perhaps you were expecting too much. On the other hand this blows my crossfired HD2900's right out of the water and I used to think they were good

Why don't you add your specs in your profile like the rest of us! Tomorrow, I'm going to test both my 4870 and 4850 on my AMD 5000BE rig. Hopefully I can run into the same "problems" as some of you, then try to figure it out. Start overclocking your machine, especially that RAM! That may be your bottleneck.

How do I OC my ram? Okay I'll add the specs :)

here is another comparison with a 8800gts clocked higher than a 9800gtx

this is not a bench where the 4870 does well yet it matches a 9800gtx no problem

here they are head to head with cpus clocked a similar speeds, with the 9800gtx at it's max overclock and the 4870 only using overdrive and the 9800gtx has it's cpu clocked about 50 mghz faster.

Also the 9800 gtx has very mature drivers and the 4870 doesn't. I understand your concern I am thinking of keeping my 8800gts that I bought to sell on ebay for 119.00 and send my 4870 back. I ,like you, think the fan fix is a pain and that 4870 isn't all that much more powerfull than the 8800 gts. I might keep the 200.00 difference for a bigger hardrive and keep the 8800gts, yet I cannot add a second 8800gts to this motherboard , but I can added a second 4870.

something is wrong with your 4870 drivers this proves it if a 8800gts at higher speeds than a stock black edition 9800gtx cannot match a 4870 then certainly a 8800gt cannot

There's certainly something wrong somewhere, I guess I'll wait until the next set of official drivers are released before I make further judgement and RMA it.

I just feel a bit gutted when I see people getting 45FPS on Crysis while I get ~20. Even playing CSS is laggy as hell.

Thanks for all your suggestions anyways :)

aaah theres the problem... earlier i ran Crysis on XP (I have a dual boot setup).... it ran like a dream... min 30fps in game (in movies it was 24-28fps)... maximum fps was 48!!!!
this was at 1920X1200 with high settings...

vista on the other hand... i ran it about 30mins ago... laggy as hell!!!!
I too have vista X64 ultimate...

looks like vista 64 is the problem here perhaps ;)

just ran Furmark,i had to reduce the clocks for it to complete though

My Score 6052 with the 4870 at 780/1035 mhz, Q6700 at 3.2Ghz.

I have decided the following things
1.Upgrade my PSU from the corsair 550wat to at least a 750wat (also so i can run xfire one day)
2. wait for good drivers
3. get another 4870 and run em in xfire.
4. Get a PCI express 2.0 board just incase its my PCi express 1.0 causing the problems.
