Yeah i did read that. From what you are saying, the HD 4850 is the only change.

However, the symptoms that you experience are classic "out of memory" type errors. Does the hard drive light up when the level is loading as someone asked?

I believe you, and agree that 2gb should be enough for that type of gaming. The problem itself just reeks of memory. Especially since you changed operating systems so we know its hardware-related.

Did you install N-force drivers?

Prototype can be heavy on the cpu and crysis is a notorious gpu killer. Maybe your rig just can`t handle them ? Can you test any other games ? Maybe something lighter.

try removing the nforce drivers, and just let windows do its thing and install the windows driver. It could be that. I know nvidia drivers sometimes don't play nice.

yes, i give same value to each column=4GB
Each column? So you gave it 4GB for initial size and maximum size? Tell you what, change the option from Custom Size to No Page file then hit "set" for each Drive you have a pagefile on (one at a time). Hit ok then reboot when asked. Go back to Virtual Memory and select System Managed Size for just C: drive or the main drive that has your OS (no partitions). And try the game again.

no its not that the 4850 is a bad card, just that lots of people encounter stuttering - and some of those people are blaming the 4850 for it.

Looks like you had stuff running while you ran that bench imo...if you didn't there could be an issue there for sure. Are you running low on HDD free space? I know you said you defragged...I'd do it again and a scandisk, maybe malware and AV scans just to be certain and safe.

Honestly in XP, that rig should be competent enough to game at higher resolutions (imo)...have you tried running games with a higher refresh rate? With V-Sync enabled?

Have you tried Catylist A.I. at Off, Low and High to see if any of those settings makes things worse or better? What driver version are you running?

Have you ran a stress test on your vid card (something like OCCT) to see if it stutters during that? How are temps during such an event? Maybe check in a tool like CPU-z and make sure the PCI-e speed hasn't dropped to 1X (though at that resolution I dunno if it'd stutter or not from that..).

I'm just running thoughts and questions through my head atm...figured I'd type em up and see if any help. Please answer the questions you can, and if you see something you haven't tried, definitely give it a shot!

thats made the issue very clear, yes.

as i said earlier: either something is wrong with your hard drive, or another program is accessing the drive already.

I know you've probably done this, but maybe check the ati drivers and see if that's the problem if it isn't the hdd in the first place.
