I started PC gaming around 2000. Back then it was Deus Ex, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Quake , Half Life, Max Payne, MoH Allied Assault (+ expansions), I'm Going In (IGI), Hitman 1/2, Red Faction1/2.

Got a better PC in 2004 and it was CoD 1/2, Splinter Cell, Half Life 2, Far Cry, Doom 3/RoE, FEAR, NFS Underground/Most Wanted, Freedom Fighters, IGI 2: Covert Strike, Hitman Contracts, The Chonicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, Star Wars: Jedi Knight/Jedi Academy.

Upgraded again to a better PC and it was CoD 4, Crysis, Portal, Bioshock, Mass Effect, STALKER, GRID, GTA IV, Assassin's Creed, Dead Space, Burnout Paradise, NFS Shift, Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow/Chaos Theory, Tomb Raider Legend/Anniversary/Underworld, DiRT/DiRT 2, Red Faction Guerrilla.

Fast forward to recent years and it's mainly sequels like Deus Ex: HR (not as good as 1st), Wolfenstein, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Max Payne 3, Modern Warfare 2,3, Splinter Cell Conviction/Blacklist, Half Life 2 Episodes, Far Cry 2/3, NFS Shift 2/Rivals, Crysis 2/3, Portal 2, Bioshock Infinite, Mass Effect 2/3, TES: Skyrim, STALKER Clear Sky/Pripyat, GRID 2, DiRT 3, AC 3/IV, Dead Space 2/3, Hitman Absolution, TR 2013, Sleeping Dogs (technically a True Crime spinoff).

Series that have stayed strong IMO are Wolfenstein, Max Payne, Splinter Cell, HL (when they get around to releasing them), Far Cry, NFS (although hit and miss), Crysis (but of course it's dead now), Portal, Bioshock (dead as well), Mass Effect, TES, Assassin's Creed, Dead Space (dead now), Hitman. It's a shame that Medal of Honor and Red Faction got canned because they started out so good.

Sleeping Dogs is probably the most unique game on the list because although it came from the True Crime series, it got quite a change when the new publishers took over and deserves it's space as a whole new IP. I know this is a LOT of games and LOT of sequels, but that is the reality anymore. It's not about a few new standout titles anymore that are fresh IPs, not on PC anyway.

Indie. S.P.A.Z. and Consortium stood out the most to me so far. There's a lot of other indie titles with serious potential but they're still quite alpha.

Rome: Total War, what else!! Ive spent probably 3,000 hours on it. I've added tons of units, tons of unit skins, even mixed and matched for my own unit skins. Replaced the world map with webird's 270BC map, written my own event scripts to replicate historical invasions, and modded about everything in the text files you can mod, including adding building strings. i even play it through the Alexander .exe for more total unit types allowed.

Empire Total war as well, has 1,200 hours logged according to Steam. Originally a bugfest, the patches, and a host of user mods of all types have fixed it, enhanced the visuals, and added units and reskins. Its the most complete as far as overall world economy....and the ship combat is fantastic!

Fallout New Vegas. Ive put 500 hours in, and played it 5 times. Every time I go back, there are new mods on the Nexus. It's engine is straining at the max with the number of mods!

Skyrim and Oblivion both have taken over 300 hours of my life. Both heavily modded. In fact, I am my game is right at the limit for the Skyrim engine, but the place never gets old, and I keep going back for 30 to 40 hours at a time!

Finally, STALKER and STALKER: Call of Pripyat. Put alot of time in both of those, added a host of mods of course! CoP is the better of the two, and the one I go back to, but STALKER....man, the sense of fear, dread, curiosity, the what next, and the feeling that survival was not assured, gives the original a feeling that cannot be replicated and I won't forget.

Sorry it's so long....it just can't be narrowed down to one!

Jagged Alliance 2, I spent so much time with this game... but for the love of god stay away from the 1.13 mod (it EXPLODES the complexity) or Wildfire. It's available as Gold edition on GoG :)

I loved Fable 3. unfortunately Fable 2 was only on xbox.

Fable 3 had to be the worst of the bunch. Fable: The Lost Chapters and its solid follow up, Fable 2 were much better games.

Anybody remember Machine Hunter? I used to love that game as a kid..

I don't remember how many times I beat the demo of that game...I really should try and find it and play it finally.

Another one I can't remember, probably the same PC Gamer demo disk. It was an isometric view, but you walked around this, kinda of post-apocalyptic level. It's hard to describe it. But in the demo there was this movie theater where you found molotovs (I think) and there were a bunch of dudes inside that you could throw them down on. Had an exploration element to it. I think there were some wraith like enemies on some train tracks and you might have had like a light saber looking weapon. It had a similar graphic style to Machine Hunter.

There's quite a few games that stuck with me over the years and I have very fond memories of:
Star Control 2 - A game way, way, way ahead of its time. A modernized version is sorely needed (improve the combat and exploration parts of the game to more modern versions, keep the universe as is. Combat in the FTL style would be an incredible match, I think).
TIE Fighter - The best space fighter game of all time. The lengthy campaign, the varied missions, and the various craft flown against all sorts of different adversaries made this absolutely amazing. Plus flying a paper-thin-can-of-death (TIE Fighter) was quite a rush. Shields are for sissies. Don't. Get. Hit.
X-COM: Terror From The Deep - Like the original X-COM with the difficulty dialed up to 666.
Baldur's Gate II - The greatest classic RPG. The entire series is well recommended, but BGII was like nothing before it in sheer scope and storyline and pretty much like nothing since.

But, with all that said, if I had to choose just one:
Jagged Alliance 2 - The best turn-based squad combat in the history of gaming. The 1.13 mod turns it into any kind of combat flavor you want, to boot. Heck, I am still playing this one and we're talking about a game that was released in 1999.

Very close to it was Metro and Bioshock.
Then Assassin Creed just for relaxing.

I was serious about Chrono Trigger btw. It is awesome beyond belief, and I say that as someone who played it the first time in 2009.

And I can't believe we've forgotten about Planescape: Torment. It is probably the best RPG ever made. This is from someone who played it in 2013 and was blown away by it. The same is true for System Shock 2.
