Tkpenalty, the G80-g92 are in fact inferior to the R600. The ring bus is actually quite amazing. I remember reading several articles on how it works and it's definitely a step ahead of Nvidia's design. Unfortunately, ATI was rushed to finish the R600 and consequently had to release an inferior product. The core design is certainly not inferior to Nvidia's current generation.
I wouldn't be surprised if the R770 actually matches the GTX-280 in raw performance. Once ATI fixes all of the corners that they cut with the R600 and adds more raw power in order to develop the R770, you will be looking at a much larger boost in performance that Nvidia could ever hope to squeeze out of their design.
Remember folks that Nvidia has pretty much stayed with the same core design since the Nv40!
