Help flashing Asus 5870 card, please

That is one thing I've tried.

I've tried the ATI reference BIOS as well as BIOS (of the same version as the reference) from Sapphire, XFX, and MSI. On the same card from other vendors, these BIOS flashes work perfectly, but not on the ASUS.

I've also tried flashing with a direct backup of the ASUS BIOS, and I get the message "Flash Already Programmed". If I try to force the flash (like you have to do for the BIOS files from other vendors) I get the same error as when trying to flash with a BIOS from another vendor.

I've swapped out the ASUS 5870 for a Sapphire VaporX 5870. The BIOS On this card is as follows:

BIOS date/time: 12/17/09 21:07
BIOS version string: 113-C00140-003
AtomBIOS version: ATOMBIOSBS-ATI VER012.018.000.001.000000

... compared to the latest ATI reference BIOS

BIOS date/time: 11/12/09
BIOS version string: 113-C00101-103
AtomBIOS version: ATOMBIOSBK-ATI VER012.014.000.005.035264

... and the ASUS BIOS

BIOS date/time: 09/15/09 21:05
BIOS version string: 113-C00101-X01
AtomBIOS version: ATOMBIOSBK-ATI VER012.011.000.006.034494

This card appears to have a much newer BIOS than even what ATI has officially released. I'm guessing that this probably contains the updates from the latest BIOS, but has been modified to slightly overclock the card (the GPU clock is 875 instead of 850, and the memory clock is 1250 instead of 1200).

I've let the machine sit for about 30 minutes and I've had no flickering on the monitor connected to the Displayport adapter, when on the ASUS I had flickering within minutes or even seconds of turning on my computer.

I'll reply back when I've had a chance to put the card through it's paces.

Also, I'll keep everyone informed on anything I head back from ASUS. For me though, I think I'm done with ASUS video cards for a while. :shadedshu

Well, here we are after several hours of gaming and nary a flicker on the Displayport monitor on this Sapphire 5870. I can finally enjoy my $450 worth of GPU the way it was meant to be enojyed!

I think latest BIOS update from ATI definitely resolved my issue, and I hope it resolves a lot of other issues for 5870 users. Now if ASUS will just step up to the plate and provide an updated BIOS.

I'll keep an eye out for any response from ASUS for everyone.

Yeah, I'm glad too.

However, this definitely wasn't the "fix" I was hoping I would have to settle for. I was really looking forward to the overclocking opportunities that the ASUS card provides with it's unlocked voltage.

Hopefully at some point ASUS may pull their heads out and I can flash my Sapphire with a new ASUS bios and get the voltage tweaks back.

that may or may not be possible HeyRay2 some cards have the max voltages hard wired on the card not in the bios so you'll be able to under volt but not over volt but here's hoping you don't strike that with your Sapphire cards

I just got the Asus 5870, and using standard 10.1 driver there are no issues at all for me. Rock solid, fast, and my games look sweet.

I usually flash my VGA bios but i checked the clocks, they are really low at idle 157/300 up to 850/1200 max. Fan is quiet at idle so i dont think i'll bother flashing. I will play around with overclocking via software but it is so fast i probably wont bother for now.

Awesome card....

@ buggalugs yeah it's not the newer versions it seems the problem stems from older first run cards and first or second gen bios's on them, where changing from one power play mode to another and voltages don't quite get there

Awesome news that the newest ATIWinFlash has a functional unlock ability! I think I tried every derivations of "unlock" except for "unlockrom" :)twitch:)

ASUS did finally get back to me and they've basically stated that they are not planning on providing a BIOS update for a while, so hopefully the newest ATIWinFlash helps a lot of ASUS 5870 owners.

As for myself, I'm pretty happy with the Sapphire Vapor-X so I'm going to stick with it. I'll see if I can get the BIOS for this card posted for people to try out.

:)

Either you are too advanced or I'm too stupid, I don't understand:

a) if I can update my XFX 5870 XT bios to fix the vertical stripes freezes.
b) if answer to a) is YES, where to find the bios .bin and what program to use (ATIWinFlash.exe?)

Thanks to anyone who may help.

DrLightman,

You should be able to flash the BIOS on your XFX 5870 using the latest BIOS from XFX. Pick the BIOS file from the below URL that most cloesly matches the Core/Memory clock speeds of your card (Use GPU-Z -- http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/ -- to identify your Core/Memory speeds):

http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/...r=XFX&model=HD+5870&interface=PCI-E&memSize=0

You can use either WinATIFLAsh or ATIFlash (from DOS prompt, but recommended over doing flash in Windows):

http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/Utilities/BIOS_Flashing/ATI/

Here is a BIOS flashing guide that should assist you:

Quick update on the Sapphire 5870 Vapor-X BIOS for those that requested it.

I've tried to submit the BIOS using GPU-Z, but I'm told that the BIOS is already in the TechPowerUP database. I'm guessing someone has already uploaded it and it's just waiting to be verified by a site administrator before it will be available.

I'll try again another time if I don't see the latest BIOS show up on the site.\

Now, back to your regularly scheduled Eyefinity gaming! :rockout:
