I built a computer a couple years ago and so I'm outdated on new stuff. But I just threw this together...

This is for the brother and he uses programs like Adobe Premiere. The budget is $600...

Processor + Mobo Combo: Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, L...

Heatsink for Processor: Thermaltake CLP0556 92mm 1 x Sleeve Bearing CPU Co...

DVD Burner: ASUS 24X DVD Burner - Bulk 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 12X...

Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Black WD5002AALX 500GB 7200...

Power Supply + Case Combo: Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, L...

Graphics Card: EVGA 01G-P3-1431-KR GeForce GT 430 (Fermi) 1GB 128...

Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 ...

Windows 7 Home Premium: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit - Oper...

The current total is: $721.90

So I need to drop it by $120, and I hope I have everything... I am completely open for suggestions as I haven't done this in awhile. Wanting to order within 3 days, thanks for any help!

EDIT: But with that combo, $50.00 mail in rebate so I'm actually at $671.90. Hmmmm I need help fellas!

bundle the motherboard with a 430 fermi instead of processor
Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, L...

(still has 30 mail in rebates)

buy a new i7 860
either on ebay
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Core-...CPU-/130564812338?pt=CPUs&hash=item1e6644ee32

or at microcenter
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0367846

that will save you 80 bucks
ditch the cooler the processor will come with one anyway and you can still OC a fair bit on it, plus im not sure the cooler you selected will be that much of an improvement anyway

so now you should be under 600 with mail in rebates

the only way your going to get lower than that is buy some used parts of ebay or switch to a diff processor video card ect, or downgrade the HD a little, none of which i recommend if you can help it, also if your a student or your brother you can get a much cheaper copy of windows that could save your budget

Use an AM3 board with a 1156 chip :nutkick:

Consider getting Sandy Bridge, in particular the 2500K, but I don't think budget will fit, especially with the 8 threads. Cut the heatsink, its not better than the stock. Cut the graphics card to something older gen too, like the 5450 or 240 etc. However, you should consider the professional ones because Adobe Premier does use CUDA I think. Bump ram with whatever you save to 8GB, more the better for graphics stuff.

430w is enough for now, but that PSU is quite bad, you might want to consider something with a higher quality if you do not like your rigs blowing up randomly.

+1 for skipping the graphic card. The new sandy bridge cpu comes with an average integrated graphic, which can handle everyday task with ease. You can forget games with it, but it doesn't seem like it is the goal of that build.

So a i5 2400 ( around 190$, go for a cheaper one according to your cpu power needs),
some 1155 mobo (price depends on you needs : sata 6gb, usb 3.0, etc. Starts at 70$, can go up to over 150$ and beyond)
8 gig of ddr3 (very cheap these days), say around 60$
Good quality psu (corsair 430w), like 40$
1 tb hard drive, spinpoint f3 or caviar black, 75$
El cheapo optical drive, say 20$
Case of your choice: 30$ to 100$

That would put you in the 500-550$ range. If you don't need the cpu power of the 2400 and go a little cheaper, don't forget to use the spare money to buy a small ssd. This will be the most important upgrade of your build. They are expensive, and of small capacity, and you have to use two drive (one for the os and the other for storage), but you will feel the speed everytime you click on something!

you forgot the OS, which I'm assuming they'll need considering they listed it.

You are right on this one. I'm just too much used to use my 7 ultimate cracked version...:pimp:

All in all, just skip the ssd part and get yourself the windows version that fits your need.

Nice build JrRacinFan, but I think he can do without the graphics card. And where is the processor?

I thought processor and mobo comes first lolololol. Well if you cut out the graphics card and replace it with a processor you will do fine. But will 4 Sandy Bridge threads beat 8 Lynnfield threads? Or we can squeeze 2600K in?

Sorry for the huge delay in response but I have not had internet installed in the new place till today. Thanks for all the massive posts!

-This build seems solid, although I have never built an AMD based system. I'm not too worried about this though...

-I also believe I can get the student edition of Windows 7, therefore...

-If I can convince him to buy a graphics card, what card could I easily add onto this build? Price range below $100, and I think he'd go for it. That way he can at least play Starcraft II.

-Finally, the blue memory is what you'd suggest to get over the red?

Looks solid, and a few bonuses end 8/31 so any response will help in my decision, thanks!

Personally I will try as hard as possible to squeeze a 2500K in, at least a 2x00 chip in because its really really powerful for the price. And if Starcraft 2 is going to be the main game, you will do very well with going Intel over AMD (trust me on this, I spend most of my waking hours living and breathing Starcraft 2). Graphics card, well, a 5770 is always a budget and solid choice, he can do very well with something a bit stronger in the form of 6850/6870, sweet spots along with 5850 and their counterparts.

I tried doing an Intel Build I'd be familiar with, but dipping into this budget I am not unfamiliar with low-medium end CPUs and mobo's. I'd love to switch to Intel if you could find something for the price range, and even buffer it up to $650 AFTER mail in rebates.

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

Take JrRacinFan's build, swap the heatsink and the mobo/processor combo to 2500K+ whatever motherboard you can get your hand on, and down the ram to 2x2gb. Or if you absolutely cannot fit in, drop to i3 2100/2120 and get a graphics card.

i have a i5 2300, it's a really fast cpu 4c/4t, but you can't oc, yeah you could set the turbo boost (3.1ghz) as default , so turn the multiplier to 31 but that's all, i have a i7 2600K @4.3 ghz and that one is beast, if i was you get a z68 mobo maybe with a small40/ 60gb vertex2 ssd (the 34nm one) with 6850/6870 not the sapphire vapor X one, people say it's loud as shit, just see if it's fits in your budget

If you can talk to him about $100 graphics card repost a yes or no. I may redo the build to allow an even better card. as far as ram goes, more multitasking or gaming with the current fm1 build is concerned?

Personally I think $650 is too high a budget to consider FM1, its almost into the 2500K territory, with only maybe $100-150 you can get a lot more power.

Adobe Premiere, video editing software, and lite gaming.. 4g would probably work for his needs.

Limit raised to ~~$750, and that is BEFORE mail in rebates (so newegg price of $750). Thanks for the quick replies!!

Personally I think $650 is too high a budget to consider FM1, its almost into the 2500K territory, with only maybe $100-150 you can get a lot more power.

Understandable.. a little persuading shouldn't be too hard. ;)
