Why does everyone still uninstall and wipe clean the old drivers before installing the new ones? I thought since the 8.0's you didn't have to do that.

I just click Install and everything is fine, not one problem. My driver and catalyst are all updated without even uninstalling 8.12 before the 9.1. Am I missing something?

Basically i was doing that on my prior card Nvidia , and never had a problem too.
By coming in this forum , and after all that ppl about issues , i said what the hell ,
lets do things by the book.

Even doing things by the book , when you turn back from 9 to 8 ,
there is a warning for overwriting three CAT 9 newer files , on windows system folder.
Other than that , the process looks fool proof .

I think I've found out what has been taking ATI so long with these drivers. Forget Windows, check out this tall list for Linux:

Highlights:
This section provides information on new features found in this release of the
RadeonTM Display Driver. These include the following:
• Support for New Linux Operating Systems
• Full OpenGLTM 3.0 Support
• Hybrid CrossFireTM support for Linux
• Multiview Support

Resolved Issues:
The following section provide a brief description of resolved issues with the latest
version of the ATI CatalystTM Linux software suite. These include:
• An incorrect error message is no longer returned when applying an unsup-
ported TV geometry in a console terminal. Further details can be found in
topic number 737-35212
• Configuring the OS to run in dualhead mode may cause both displays to
become shredded and unusable
• Configuring the driver for a secondary adapter using the command “aticonfig
--enable-monitor=auto” may cause the system to stop responding
• After running “aticonfig --lscc” the CrossFireTM candidate adapters are listed
as “none”
• Linux third instance of xserver may show video corruption when enabled on
ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics
• Linux Desktop fails to render in SuSE 11 with ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics
in big desktop mode
• Xserver fails to start on ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics
• Vertical sync tearing issues may be noticed with the following Catalyst Con-
trol Center settings “Wait for Vertical refresh” and “Off, unless application
specifies” have been applied
• Segmentation fault may occur on OpenGL call glTexSubImage2D
• System does not switch to “Optimal Performance” when running on AC
power and returning from sleep
• Secondary display will not be set to 640 x 480 on restart of the xserver
• Unable to start dual head mode after installing driver from aticonfig
• Playing back a MPEG2 file in hardware accelerated mode may intermittently
stop and outputs error to console window
• Mplayer may stop responding when returning from S3/S4 sleep
• Ubuntu segmentation fault may occur when installing the driver from the ati-
config command line
• Screen corruption may be noticed when starting Nexuiz
• Indirect OpenGL rendering fails when dual-head mode has been enabled
• System may become unresponsive when multi adapter displays are enabled in
the reverse order of the adapters
• Some video clips may show stuttering and corruption during playback in
mplayer
• No video displayed during playback of H.264 media file on certain Mobile
platforms
• Open GL Linux: AIGLX not enabled by default on Ubuntu 8.10 64bit
• Running Quake4 on some CrossFireTM systems may cause the system to
become unresponsive
• Moving glxgears window may show some screen corruption
• Softimage XSI v7.0: Models with over 15 million triangles may load with
some screen corruption
• Texture error may be noticed while playing any media file using Mplayer
• Catalyst Control Center shows incorrect Bus Capability and Maximum Set-
ting as AGP 12x in CCCLE
• Bus type is shown as PCI instead of PCI Express 2.0 in the Catalyst Control
Center's Information page
• Catalyst Control Center Information page shows incorrect bus type (PCI as
PCIE)
• Catalyst Control Center may not start after clicking desktop icon or running
from terminal window
• Catalyst Control Center does not load when Xinerama is enabled with three or
more displays
• Catalyst Control Center power play aspects is not available
• Catalyst Control Center: Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic filtering pages grayed
out for secondary adapter on enabling 'Xinerama'
• Catalyst Control Center: enabling display with Xinerama may cause 2 x 2 vir-
tual desktops to overlap
• Catalyst Control Center: Anti-Alias controls are greyed out on ATI FireGL
V5600/V3600

The multiview they have implemented here (multiple displays active while in Crossfire) is something Nvidia couldn't do in Windows with SLI until Big Bang II drivers (I'm impressed - if it actually works). Furthermore, they have the 4870x2 working in crossfire in Linux (although oddly, the 3870x2 is still absent). I'll install these and let you guys know how it turns out. Currently I get random artifacts every now and then and there has been a long time ATI bug where one cannot play games properly with Compiz enabled.

I'm back. These Linux 9.1 Cats were so easy to install! I had nothing but problems with installing the windows versions until I did an uninstall of Catalyst Software, reboot, driver sweeper in safemode, reboot, crapcleaner (registry and cleaning) + defragmentation, reboot, install the drivers, then reboot. After all that, I still cannot get CCC to work as it says my card is not supported (4870- wtf?). I may have gained a frame or two in Warhead, but I lost almost a thousand points in Vantage.

With linux, I download the .run file, changed permissions, copied/pasted a few lines in the terminal, rebooted, and BAM! That was with previous drivers already installed too!

Here are my results: Still cannot do anything graphically intensive with advanced desktop effects enabled in Ubuntu. But I have no more artifacts at all, no reboots when playing HD video (1080p), Call of Duty 2 framerates have doubled under wine and I can now engage DX9 mode without problems, wine now lets me use all 512mb vRAM so I can play CoD2 at 1680x1050 instead of 1280x720 like before, and they now have XvMC hardware acceleration that for whatever reason after installing it, my HD videos run smooth as butter (even though my CPU usage remains the same). This is all in the 64bit version of Linux too!

Way to go ATI/AMD (for Linux). Boo for your efforts in Windows.

Edit: actually, my cpu usage in XBMC has about halved when playing Shrek 2 in 1080p, but no cpu usage change with VLC.

The only issue I have after installing 8.12 was 3dmark vantage was screwy. The water on the first scene was just covering everything. Would 9.1 be worth installing to try and fix this or should I just leave it?

Its worth update

Honestly i would say , that the 8.12 its a good stable fresh driver .

The 9.1 failed to work with Photoshop .

I work with computers from 1996 until today , first time in my life ,
a VGA driver failed to work with photoshop .

This is a very bad sign , driver stability and such .
Cursors flashing because of that .

I feel safe with the 8.12 :)

Loaded 9.1 tonight on Vista 64. Just did the install without removing previous version (8.10).
Loaded fine.
Some people have suggested removing RivaTuner before loading new Catalyst drivers.
I didn't do that either, RT starts fine on boot for fan control.

Started getting atiumdag.dll CTDs in games.

Shut off Catalyst AI. No more crashes.

I'm still not happy with my internet connection, but that's not ATI's fault
