ATI HD5XXX Series Discussion

In reality- 800SPs isn't really true... that was a marketing ploy to say "Hey! We got more SPs!!"
If you were to compare ATI to Nvidia on the Nvidia side of the field... ATI would have
HD4870/50/90 = 80SPs
GTX260/80= 216/240

Thats how it was explained to me by an engineer at TSMC.
Uhm no... ATI and Nvidia process in two different ways, each utilizes rops and sp's in different ways They cannot be compared like that
Nvidia is faster, but not by much
ATI looks better, but not by much

Well this post is just kind of depressing...I was planning on building a new computer in the fall and if rumors are true that the 5000s are just going to be a revision like the 3000 series then i guess it wouldnt make much sense to get them unless the performance increase was going to worth the price. Either way ill prob wait to see how they do.

Well, we don't have to speculate and guess and what it all means. We have TPU. We can just wait til they get a pre-release version and test it for us. Then give us nice charts comparing the new 5000 series card to 20 other cards. Then break down power use and OC.

P.S. That Engineer is special...not in a good way.

I used a 3870x2 to replace my X1950XTX crossfire setup (had an accident where screwdriver drop + graphics card = paperweight on one of my 1950's). Was a really decent move - for like 2 weeks i had the most powerful graphics card on the market, so if the 5k will be for the 4k as the 3k was to 2k i'd be very interested in a 5k series card - imagine the clockspeeds you could get out of a 40nm 4890....

Well i personally didnt mean that the 3000 series were very bad cards. I just meant that it would suck to wait for the 5000 series for only a 10 percent increase over the 4000 series cards. Plus by that time the 4000 series cards will drop even more in price giving them a better price/performance value. :)

Wait and see with the 5000 series I guess, but I'm quite sure performance will increase more than 10% over the RV790. We have to wait for benchmarks, and they are coming soon. Also, AMD seems to be trying to get rid of their RV790's as much as possible with that HD 4860 they are releasing. We'll probablly see some sort of other RV790 variant too.

Thats what i plan on...waiting...I hope tpu will get some benchmarks up soon to ease all of the worries. I do hope that ati pulls out an ace with the 5000 series because i am looking forward to purchasing a couple in october.

There have been numerous reports since April 22nd claiming as soon as August and as late as November. An article (from FUD) states that RV870 is basically the same design as RV770 which is a little disappointing to me.
well GT200 is a superset of G92 hehe so does i matter?, double the performance is allways win, btw any new generation builds upon the previous one, RV770 builds on RV670

the only problem with that is that the RV670's were flawed where as the G92's were not,

in comparison to ATI's sp's, nvidia's are between 4 to 5 times better if you look at the numbers, and this is easy to see with GTS250 vs HD4870, so the GTX380 vs the HD5870, spec wise, the GTX380 is gonna run with the lead and I'm not even including the fact that nvidia is adopting a newer architecture vs the old one used with both the G92's and GT200

The first DX11 graphic card --- AMD-ATI RV870 is about to come, let's waiting with anticipation. enjoy it! 2 6pin power connectors, and PCB is a little bit longer than 2900XT

Why? They were priced accordingly.
November,15,2007 launch date for the 3800's
June,1,2008 launch date for the 4800's
7 months........ In that time (6 months actually) I watched a 3870 go from $180 to $80 to second rate to behind a 4830 that sold for $90 The hd3k's brought pci-e 2.0 with what 10% improvement in memory transfers, which almost made it worth it. The 5000's will most likely only bring us Dx11 and a smaller die. I bet the 6000's will be out around May of next year, when we start seeing some actual good games out with Dx11 (unless modern warfare2 is Dx11)
All that said I'm gonna be one of those assholes who buy an over priced 5000 just so i can kick myself in the ass when the fairly priced.vastly improved 6000's come out 6 months later:rockout:

All that being true and all....Why can't Nvidia make the better color scheme.....Really the last Nvidia i bought was a 8800gtx also have a 8800 ALPHA DOG woot wooooot! But, I don't like either of them, Which is why the gtx is in my daughter's pc and the ALPHA DOG is gettin solded.... They were faster then any ATI card i had until I got a 4830, but i still preferred a crappy HD2900pro 512bit version for it's vastly better color scheme. If Nvidia can fix that then I'll buy one, until then I'll stick with ATI
yeah i seen a gtx 260 same issue crappy color scheme:slap:

Don't hold your breath. ATI can barely get enough RV740s from the currently poor yielding 40nm process, much rather a larger, more complex, higher power consuming RV870...

There's just as good a chance that 40nm production capacity is being dedicated to the RV870, subsequently causing a shortage of RV740 chips, which at this point doesn't appear to be so much of a shortage as a loss of interest on the part of AMD's partners, which again, could very well be attributed to the oncoming HD5 series. I feel like a lot of the SKUs AMD is releasing (and has released the past month or two) are pretty much meant to deteriorate in value almost immediately, so as to kill off old (defective) back stock to avoid the type of situation they had when RV770 launched and the market was still saturated with RV670 parts.

Yeah, funny things happen when you completely throw numbers out of an equation... Btw, I have a P4EE you might be interested in.

Wow that is one LONG card. Almost looks like the fan blows over the VRMs as well. That would mean not all the hot air exhausts out the back. Interesting little handle thingy on the bottom of the front (where the PCI-E connector is) of the card.

Actually 3870's were quiet a bit over $180 brand new. I bought my first 2 for $254 a pop, by the time the 4k series came out I actually had bought 2 3870's in that time  But here's a difference you seem to be missing, the company changed hands between the 2900's and the 3800's. And while the 3800's weren't a ton more powerful, they were far easier on power, and a much better overall card, that was far more consistent, and didn't need to be clocked to the moon to be awesome. Think of it as a very much needed revision, now the company is better funded, don't expect them to have to do a revision like that again.

So don't expect the 6000 series Q2 next year, it's just a far different situation for ATI than it was for the 2k to 3k switch.
