Hi Guys

I've been following this thread for some time now.
My Sapphire 5870 arrived and i did some testing.

I ran the VANTAGE on performance setting.
GPU P11900 and CPU P12600. I get E6xxx in extreme mode.

Surely i should be getting higher than this? Thats the same score i got with my 4890??? Any ideas?

PC specs:
ASUS M3A78-T
PhenonII 940BE @ 3.6ghz
8gb DDR2 800mhz
850w Corsair PSU

I've made sure i don't have AA on...so i'm pretty stumped here with this low score.
Card is running in PCI-E (2) x16.

BTW I've ran a quick OC (GPU 900 and MEM 1250 def volts) with MSI afterburner and score stays relatively the same.

Mine says 10.1, on Win 7 x64 RC. But the first tab says DirectX 11.

Btw, my 5850 doesn't exceed 60 degrees at 25% fanspeed :D Very nice!

I think that your processor is bottlenecking you :banghead: Overclock it to 4GHz and reinstall your windows or secure sweep all of the drivers and then reinstall them again.

Perhaps it's a driver issue. Follow this guide to uninstall and reinstall the drivers. http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=52502 <--Always works for me.

Make sure DirectX is updated: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en

Also make sure you are using the latest drivers for the 5870: http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/ATIRadeonHD5800seriesrecommendedgraphicsdriver.aspx

Never ran 8gb's of RAM in an AMD system myself, but I have heard of problems doing so. Perhaps try running just 4gb's and see how things go?

i'm nearly at the end of the very long process that was installing xp and getting everything sorted (drivers), i'll tell you if it worked soon, if it didn't i'll just rma the bugger lol, since i can't pin it on anything but the card if it doesn't improve.

Ok, i've made the changes and score is relatively the same :(
So i guess i am CPU limited.

are the cpu cores maxed when you run it? (mine definitely were not, and i run the exact same cpu.) if they aren't and we're both stuggling, our performance could be linked to the combination of the two components, since people with different cpu's, both better and worse, have had better results. Btw, sorry about the double post, tiredness :(

EDIT: Clean os did nothing whatsoever, and it does seemt o be cpu limited, as rattling the cpu overclock around did change the fps, even though the cus aren't running at full, so what gives? especially since combining a last generation high end card with our cpus will produce better results, meh, sorry if i seem a little distressed lol :)

what would help is if anyone with a 940 with any card showing if they are getting above the same scores as us, then it may just be a thing amd has to sort out, after all these cards are new.

btw did you have two 4890s in crossfire? that might be a clue, as a 5870 gives you basicly two 4870s in crossfire performace

3dmark is not a game, try a real game ;) you also got that most review sites uses a overclocked $1000 cpu to test with, thats why the scores are higher

my 5850 gives me about the same performance as my 4850x2, just less noise, less heat and no need to worry about crossfire.

ya, and tbh 3dmark06 isn't a problem for me, being 1k off the scores posted by some review sites, but trying to test gta4 (the game ive noticed to biggest dip in frams) is tremendously difficulty, since xp seems to just say no (so its re-install time for gta4!).

Yup. I sold my 2 x 4890 for a 5870. Less noise and more energy efficient with none of the Xfire hassles.

Games run perfectly. No dip in frames. I think i am CPU limited in vantage. I'm running my CPU @ 3.6ghz. Thought it would be fast enough. Guess not.

@ Erocker, I will try running 4gb ram tonight.

@ Bobzilla, what Vantage score are u getting?

BTW I'm running Windows 7 x64/

Thanx for all the help

I already love my 5850 and I've hardly let in run yet ;)
Say wha'?! That's no'in, I'm lovin' mine and I don't even got none ye'!:p (the most fanboyish remark of the centuary, lol)
Mine says 10.1, on Win 7 x64 RC. But the first tab says DirectX 11.
Btw, my 5850 doesn't exceed 60 degrees at 25% fanspeed :D Very nice!
It will say DX11 in Win7 RTM, don't worry.
Nice to hear the great temps. My current OC'd 4890 is a beast on temps.

Yes, that is a fact. OCing with 8GB de-stabilises the OC on the Phenom II's because of the stress on the IMC.

4GB is definitely the way to go w/ PII's when OCing. And don't push them beyond 1800MHz, in fact 1600MHz with tighter timings is better, performance wise, whilst easing the pressure off the IMC & RAM slightly.:toast:

It's DDR2 800mhz, so i won't get anything close to that speed.

Remember that rendering of Ruby some time back? It's a really nice light state and check out who they got to model.
