Craigslist and ebay search for a used set of Logitech X-230's. I'm still amazed by how my old ones sound...I bought them back in 2006 refurbished and they're still going strong and sound great. It's what we use upstairs....I have yet to hear a sub-$100 2.1 PC speaker set even come close. The last few sets of AL products I've listened to left me super disappointed...do some research on those before you buy them. I guess if you're not expecting much and aren't too picky about sound you'll be okay though!

You could always go a cheap 2.0 route, get a Class T DTA100 amp and some Dayton 52 (I think)...bookshelf speakers as well. Won't have the thumpy bass, but everything else will be pretty damn good...and there's tons of mods that folks have done to those speakers to really make them sound amazing. Just food for thought! If you need a compact setup and are set on 2.1 and are on a tight budget I'd say at least look for some X-230's...yes they're old but gooooood, if not great compared to what's out there today in the sub-$100 category, at least since I last looked. IMHO.
