I tend to agree on Chevalr1c. $65 is abusing it, charging a smaller amount will lead that, that client will refer you to another client and so on and then start on an hourly rate, if you builded up enough clientelle. Before you remove antivirus programs etc. suggest the client on certain programs. Since her lack of knowledge, educate her a bit. Write instructional word files on how to defrag, checkdisk etc. Keep up the good work and karma won't bite you on the ass.

did the defrag finish? how about chkdsk?

yeah, if the client doesn't have a problem, just tell them that mcafee is shot and dead due to it being a piece of shit, and replaced with good quality software.

post a hijackthis log if you can, i'd be interested to see what comes up.

have you tried startup delayer yet?

theres a registry fixer there.. give it a try, it does wonders.

also a startup option, unchecking a bunch of crap processes will make your startups faster.. you can always re-check them and what not later.

getting defraggler and defragging the hard drive will also cause a massive speed up, but maybe ccleaner+chkdsk should be good for this round, maybe defragging next round:p

for chkdsk, type

PHP:
chkdsk /R /F

in command prompt.. also if it's a ntfs, you can also replace /r with /b

i cannot use the b parameter for some reason. and it wont run because its in a "locked State" or something like that. Do i need to be in normal mode to be able to run this??

Alright i booted into normal mode and its running great now. way faster at start up.

Not sure if i need to do the chkdsk anymore

I'm sorry to say ,but that is a VERY naive statement about a VERY good AV product.

I dont call something good when it has gotten some of my friends viruses. They switched to AVG and Avast and have been safe ever since

Maybe your friends are porn whores which no matter what AV you have in any scenario will ever be 100% safe :slap: I have ran MSE on many client and personnel computers without a single hitch. I have MANY clients that are "porn whores" there systems are fine :toast:

It really is a good AV. People dismiss it because M$ makes it. NOT A GOOD REASON. It works very well. It is low on resources.... What more can you ask for?

Avast is pretty low on resources to and has a gaming setting.

I know what your saying though

I tend to agree on Chevalr1c. $65 is abusing it, charging a smaller amount will lead that, that client will refer you to another client and so on and then start on an hourly rate, if you builded up enough clientelle. Before you remove antivirus programs etc. suggest the client on certain programs. Since her lack of knowledge, educate her a bit. Write instructional word files on how to defrag, checkdisk etc. Keep up the good work and karma won't bite you on the ass.

I charge $70 an hour, with a max of $140 to clean an infected system. If they just want a file off of it, I charge $35. You can't make a living being nice to these people, and it certainly isn't taking advantage of them. I don't know how to fix my car, so I pay someone to do it(and he charges more an hour than I do). I'm not being taken advantage of, peoples time is worth money. My time is worth money, and I'd rather spend my free time having fun than learning how to repair my car. If they don't feel that your time is important, they can figure it out themselves.

The only thing that go your friends viruses was your friends. I've seen plenty of machines come in absolutely loaded with viruses that had AVG and Avast on them. Nothing is 100% effective, and they are all pretty much equally effective.

jeez 70 and hour! CRIPES! i was thinking like 50 and hour and even 25 an hour!

Ive spent about 2.5 hours to 3 on this system

I just updated its adobe reader to version 9.4 they had 8.2 so it seem doing that helped the performance a bit as well

How much do you charge for building a computer??

I do i flat rate of $200 ussually

Alright i booted into normal mode and its running great now. way faster at start up.

okay, well lets use /r /f parameters.

PHP:
 chkdsk c: /r /f

you won't be able to run chkdsk from inside windows on the same disk that windows is booting from, because the disk is in use. so you'll get a message like so,

type y, and hit enter.

then reboot the system, and you should get something like this:

then let it go to completion and it will take you back to windows xp regular login in once it's done, might take a while to do though..

so you said normal mode is running great now, so has the freezing gone away, and is it stable?

have you done anything with startup processes? like disabling in ccleaner, or staggering with startup delayer?

It really is a good AV. People dismiss it because M$ makes it. NOT A GOOD REASON. It works very well. It is low on resources.... What more can you ask for?

exactly why i've never touched it, and wont. my university doesn't see mcafee or mse as reasonable antivirus to be used on computers registered to the network either. they do like avast though, which does work rather well.

yeah, look up, just edited the post up. it's a nice courtesy to do for your customer, plus it may help a good bit too.

after that, we can stress test, see how smoothly things run :),

good to see that you can actually stand at the desktop now though.

let me know once chkdsk is done, then we can also work on startup delayer...

yeah, look up, just edited the post up. it's a nice courtesy to do for your customer, plus it may help a good bit too.

after that, we can stress test, see how smoothly things run :),

good to see that you can actually stand at the desktop now though.

let me know once chkdsk is done, then we can also work on startup delayer...

what will start up delayer do??

jeez 70 and hour! CRIPES! i was thinking like 50 and hour and even 25 an hour!

Ive spent about 2.5 hours to 3 on this system

I just updated its adobe reader to version 9.4 they had 8.2 so it seem doing that helped the performance a bit as well

How much do you charge for building a computer??

I do i flat rate of $200 ussually

I'm one of the cheap ones in my area, and I have a good reputation of actually knowing what I'm doing, unlike most of the other assclowns that do business around me.

I charge $100/h for onsite work and $125/h for networking work.

How much I charge to build a computer depends on how long they want me to warranty it. For a 1 year warranty I charge $200, for 2 years I charge $300 and for 3 years I charge $400. Of course they don't actually know how much I'm charging, I built that into the price of the computer, the only thing they know is the final total.

yeah it way better now. Idk should i run a stress test lol. its sitting at the desktop right now fully functional!

Should i even run chkdsk even though its running so good??

Personally, I don't run chkdsk unless I know the disk actually has bad sectors. Instead, run an HDD Scanner designed specifically to tell you if there are bad sectors or not(HD Tune is an OK free one, and Seagates put out a free DOS based scanner that does a good job also).

i dont do any of the warrenting stuff. I just fix it if it needs fixed and if parts need RMA i make calls to the manufactures of the parts. Ive build about 16 and am known by hundreds of people. Just none of the other hundreds have come to see me about computer stuff.

Im thinking about charging 50 an hour for everything i do with a max for 120 on system tune ups like this, and like 250 max for building a computer

That is fine if you are just doing it on the side.

Realize, I do this for a living, and have a storefront to maintain, so my overhead is high. But people also feel more comfortable bringing the computer to an actual shop. If I was doing this out of my garage I'd charge a hell of a lot less.:toast:

start up delayer:

it boots my system fast, opens up firefox, and then works on loading up all of the other shit later, so that theres not like 25 processes all starting up right when i boot.
