Only GTX 9xx have DX12 support with DX12.1 feature level . GTX 7xx series will have DX12 support with DX11.0 feature level. The same as HD7900/R9-280/R9-290/R9-390 series that feature DX12 support with DX11.1 feature level. On AMD's side, only R9 Fury has proper DX12 support with DX12.0 feature level.

EDIT:
Added a bit extra info on AMD cards (the DX11.1 part).

The 770 will serve you well, if the price is right. I am assuming it is.

So what are your suggestions to replace for the old 6950?

RejZoR just said, only the 9xx series has full 12.1 support. But not having that series of cards is not going to disappoint. Most people are going to see huge gains jist because of the way CPU and GPU communicate under DX12.

Don't sweat it. If I were you, and it was a good deal, I would get the 770, and then look again in a year and a half or 2.

Depends on if features help them, they could add it as option can be turned on and off like did for dx9/dx10/11 for some games.

I think very few devs will support 12.1 in the first couple years of Dx12 use, and it will only be at the heavy coaxing of Nvidia, since AMD doesn't support it yet. Most devs don't want to eliminate half their customer base regarding graphics features, and when you look at how little used and poorly received a lot of Nvidia graphics features have been, all the more reason to think so.

@Mussels,
I've read 12.1 is more than just more efficient performance, but a feature set as well. It remains to be seen how either version will be used though. From what I've read Dx12 is pretty complex to code for. This is why MS have said they only expect bigger teams to use it, and will likely only be seen in AAA titles for the most part.

This looks interesting:

Not like I plan to go the windows 10/ Direct X 12 way anyway. I dont like it will be subscription based.
Microsoft already debunked that saying it will not be subscription based i thought?

edit:
Between July 29th 2015 and July 29th 2016, you will have the chance to snag a free upgrade to Windows 10. After July 29th 2016, you will have to pay for a Windows 10 license.

Theres a tweet from Gabriel Aul confirming it. Why do ppl keep thinking there is a sub for windows 10?

Hence why i said it will be optional, where it will have DX12 base, but will have option for DX12.1. Look at UT 2k4, had option for software, DirectX and OpenGL. So they won't be eliminating anyone.

Just take 1 person spreading misinformation and it can go viral then everyone believes it not matter how wrong it is. I could point out many instances of that happening involving the police, if you get my meaning.

Point is, it's been said time and time again and it's been everywhere that they arent doing a sub. It's like people just hear something, dont bother doing follow up reasearch on it days/weeks/months later to actually see if it's been reverted or debunked. Then they look like an idiot when someone states what I quoted from Devon when they state old information they never bothered following up on.

So is the 680 or 770 still worth buying?
In my book, no mostly because at this point Nvidia has stopped working on Kepler and has recently let it fall out of place. If I was you, I would but a GTX 960 over it because the performance overall is similar and you get the newest feature sets Nvidia has to offer including more support for the later DX12.

I would wait however for Windows 10 and DX 12 to be more official of course. That might give you the knowledge and everyone else needed to know exactly what to expect.

that was the last thing I heard about it so I didn't pay any attention to later news.
But someone in this thread has already corrected me so I might give it a try after all.

They Said something similar about Microsoft office now you have office 365 subscription
Eventually they want windows to be yearly subscription

you won't buy windows you will have to rent it each year No subscription and your locked out of your PC

Can't be more offical then being released in less then 2 weeks so.

they haven't stopped working on it, not as big of a priority but they still work on it.

First of all, its still not out and were still waiting on a lot more information regarding DX 12. The support is listed, but we still do not have what that all entitles at the end of the day other than charts pointing out the tiers.

Second, no they only give it SLI profiles which they give to anything that can still receive drivers.

Can anyone tell me, will DX12 allow me to turn up graphics settings in games. I have a single Titan X, 4K monitor and a Intel 5930k. Would be nice if I didn't have to buy another Titan. Obviously I mean all things being equal like support in game for DX12 and appropriate drivers.

Possibly, don't hold your breath tough. I've been messing around in W10 with GTAV. It's not DX12 but the VRAM load is cut in half vs W7 due to WDDM 2.0.

The most noticeable effect is the dynamic use of VRAM, instead of loading up the game and seeing it straight to 3GB and stay there, it constantly rises and falls. For example, if u just sit in one spot like a traffic intersection it can drop to as little as 700MB, whereas in W7 it would just stay at 3GB and not drop.

When it runs crap like with the last drivers I get about 35fps and much stutter. :p When it runs well I get 55fps (my CAP) with 4xAA @1600x1200.

The downside is textures are paged from RAM even when there is plenty of available VRAM, resulting in occasional stutter and higher RAM load.
Tiled Resources really needs Unified Memory for optimal performance. (Actually now I think about it the stutter is prob due to me running out of RAM, I only got 8GB)

A 770 would be a decent upgrade from the 6950. Or u could grab a 7950/280 which is what I have, they all perform about the same.

Win7 and Win10 same settings. Distance scaling set at 2970MB in graphics options. (I bumped up my GPU clocks by 100mhz since then which gave me 55fps).

it should allow you to use higher settings in games that use DX12's speed improvements but current games won't help much in less they get updated.

Dev for project cars said DX12 would give them like 30-40% increase performance in their game.
