I love TPU. I love the info and the education I get here from all the members. The mods are more than fair and the ones that have nailed me with an infraction I have come to consider them friends. Erocker is a good example. Hell I got more infractions from him than anyone yet its never been personal. Further more I love the debates.

However there has always been something that has kinda bothered me since the creation of our new GN site. The fact people keep posting in the TPU GN about non-tech related info. I feel as if the GN section of TPU should be renamed "Tech General Nonsense." A place where we could talk about everything technology based but doesn't apply to the other categories on TPU. You know a place to talk about the Hard ion collider or the Hubble telescope. Instead I go in there and its like a damn facebook page.

Granted I'm as guilty as anyone posting in that section but I think its time we use that section "correctly" and use the new GN site "correctly". IMHO.

What I think would really help is if moderators had a way to send threads from one site to the other. It could boost usage of both sites (slight inconvinence for users too) but wouldn't be easy to implement.

Granted I'm as guilty as anyone posting in that section but I think its time we use that section "correctly" and use the new GN site "correctly". IMHO.

From whatever little I know you and the kind of treatment people on TPU give to seemingly harmless and honest tech off topic threads, things won't change for the better. An attempt to cleanse TPU was to spin off GN.

Thats my point. We need to "force" the use of the new GN site. Eliminate temptation completely. First and foremost this is a tech site. The GN section has become something else. A small adjustment in the rules and the title could boost the new GN site and bring TPU back to where it "should" be.

FYI I'm not talking about this for any particular reason or person. We are all guilty of misuse of the section and site.

They made the GN site for a reason. To get general nonsense off of TPU. However as long as TPU has a general nonsense dedicated to non-tech threads people will never use the new GN website. So I propose they adjust the rules and title to draw attention to the new site and use the GN section for what I think is its intended purpose of tech related "nonsense".

Sort of agree. Make TPU's internal GN specifically higher quality not just emo facebook nonsense. But I think it isnt worth policing. Too timeconsuming. It's up to members to create the "right" forum culture.

Since GN was moved, I don't visit very often anymore. GN on TPU was a diversion, little else.
Either way, I'm good with what W1zz did.

Not really. Thats just the thread that got me started but not the reason. I've been thinking about this a while. However that thread is a great example what I'm talking about. I think PP and you would make a great addition to the GN website. Have you been there?

I disagree. I think the GN section on TPU is needed. It's a break from the normal postings and it allows users to joke around and discuss anything. I think it also strengthens the community by creating new friends that you wouldn't normally acheive through trouble-shooting their video card issues.

I will not create an account on the new GN site. If the current one on tpu goes away, I really think you are closing the door on a healthy section that receives a lot of traffic from new and old members. I think this is exactly the same as the attempt to remove the games section from TPU to a dedicated Game forum.

^do agree with you. It serves a useful purpose. But it does SPAM the "new posts" search feature. And it has required a lot of mod intervention. Unfortunately we cant rely on ALL members to behave in a freeforall section. Therefore guidelines, not rules, on appropriate content, and removing it from the "new posts" list, would be welcome IMO.

Not everything in life needs to serve an exact defined purpose. Does minesweeper serve a purpose and does it really need to be part of the OS? Not really, but it's a nice little break from coding...just an example. One mans garbage is anothers treasure.

There must be a way to exclude it from being indexed for search as well as stopping it from appearing in the new threads list??

Here's my 2 cents ...

I have no problem with GN and GPU being seperate sites. The problem was that there was not a seamless transition and the fact that the those site did not "feel" like TPU. With both of the sites, the bond that ties the TPU users together (for better or worse) is/was lost.

From a purely technical standpoint, it should make no difference, but it is the social aspect of TPU that makes this site thrive. Without that, it is just more web pages.

We can all (myself included) say that the sites are still only two clicks away, but it's not really the fact that it's easy to get to, its that it just does not feel like TPU anymore.

Maybe some day W1zz will come up with an idea to integrate those things back into TPU in a way that makes sense for the site overall and retains the social atmosphere that is TPU. Until then, we will adapt and enjoy.

I think a rename to "Miscellaneous" would work and have it be for the "nonsense" technology stuff or something that doesn't fit anywhere else. Everything else nonsense can go to generalnonsense.net. I see no difference in having a general nonsense forum on TPU or a link to gn.net that takes you directly to that site.

You have to understand I do not want to end the kind conversation that goes on in GN but we have a site dedicated to it now. TPU is no longer the place for it.
