Yeah I believe that is what I'm gonna do, stick w/the 6300. The price difference doesn't seem worth lower oc-ability. I'm still tossup between 1g or 2g of ram, but I know I'll be happier w/gaming if I get 2gigs. Tomorrow my loan should be done, and tomorrow night I should be able to start ordering away.

Should I look for different ram Tigger69? Or do you think that'll suffice for my needs? It looks to be good stuff, I don't need anything too insane for oc-ability, if I can it 3.5 ish, keep it cool n' stable, it should do what I need.

just get some that will do a fairly easy 500fsb 1:1.a 3.5ghz c2d is more than ample for windows and any game.

you need ddr2 1000(pc8000) really.or 800 that will do 500 at least to be safe.

are you getting the p5b-dlx? it has just got a new 1333fsb bios too.

Yeah I'll be getting the P5B Dlx, I found it for $183 w/free 3 day shipping, can't pass that up for such a sweet mb. Yeah, I'd get DDR2 1000, but it's prices are kinda pricey, and I figure the stuff I have is capable of 500+, so if I hit 500 with it, I still have good headroom which is good for stability. Any suggestions on brands of ddr2 to look for? I can get 1 gig of that buffalo firstix for around $125 (2x512). I'd still like 2 gigs, but we'll see what happens.

Sweet a 1333 fsb bios! Nice, that could come in handy in the future for sure!

Thanks again dude! You've been a great help, any more suggestions you have please post it!

Alright well I ordered everything just a few minutes ago!!! Decided to go w/Newegg, 3 day shipping and saved on shipping buying it all there! Total was over budget, but only by 50 bucks, but I'm sure it'll be worth it!

I got the Buffalo Ram, read a few good reviews with it and the P5B Dlx and hitting 1200 pretty easily. E6300 and P5b Dlx, and Powercolor X1950 Pro Extreme 256. I'll post later once it's all up and running, hopefully this weekend! Woot!

Well just got it all up and runnin last night! I also got Vista! So I'm giving it a shot, I like some things about it, it sure looks good, but it is different and will take some getting used to. But overall the CPU/MB/RAM/VID I purchased run like a charm. Everything booted right up, I updated the bios right away. Right now I'm at 2.4 OC @ 350 FSB. Stock voltage, and with fresh AS5/AC PRo 7 cooler, it is 33-35 idle, and 46-48 load. I am very impressed thus far. That vid card is a monster though, I thought my X850xt pe was big w/that AC Cooler, this card with it's length and huge AC cooler on it is a beast! It stays very cool, 33 idle, 45 load at least so far.

I'm gonna oc a little more. Probably hit 2.8 - 3 ish. At least until the AS5 is set. Well I might not be able to wait, but I am burnin it now so I'm gonna let it run for at least tonight and tomorrow while I'm at work.

Any MB settings you recommend Tigger?

Thanks again for your recommendations, I am so far extremely happy with this system!

Only thing tho...is TAT thinks my CPU is a Pentium M, and I don't think it's reading temps correctly, they actually dropped a little bit after rasing voltage up a little and OC -ing a lot. Hit 500 FSB pretty easily. May try for more, probably not yet.

CoreTemp doesn't seem to have all features enabled...seems a little weird. Reads close to same temps as TAT. At least recognizes it's a core2. Any thoughts?

Hey Tigger,

It seems I'm not orthos stable yet at 1.32 vcore at 3.5. Kinda bummed about it. The system runs great, but fails orthos at ~30-35 minutes. Temps don't go over 49C at least what TAT reads.

Here are my settings:

Vcore- 1.32
FSB- 500
FSB v- 1.4
NB v- 1.25
SB v- 1.6
Mem - 2.3 5-5-5-15
ICH v - auto (would changing this help?)

I have memory set at 1:1 (533 when 6300 was at stock speeds).
I have found some sites on bios settings, none seem to have the current bios in them, but I am gonna try out a few options and see if it's not another setting or something I forgot to disable. But if you could let me know your settings and such, I think that would help greatly!

I love this pc, it's a beast! Money well spent! Thanks again!

L632B420.

Well I did some more tweaking, but seems no avail, as now orthos is erroring in mere minutes.

So I upped the vcore to 1.35

Still erroring...

I set the PCI-e bus at 110, but might take it back to 100. I also tightened the timings to 4-4-4-12. DDRv is at 2.25. But in orthos atm I am just stressing the CPU. Yesterday when I did 35minutes it was both cpu and ram stress.

Thanks guys.

1.35 vcore didn't seem to do much. Orthos failed after a little more than two hours. I upped it to 1.38.

Bummer, I was hoping to get more oc for less voltage, but at 1.35 load temps didn't budge over 52C, and it would go back down to 50-51 for a few minutes. I'll keep ya posted!

I am fairly certain that CPU-Z isn't reading voltages right, but if it is, then I'm in Vista with 1.344v instead of bios set 1.38, and under orthos load it droops to 1.312. If these are accurate readings, then that would explain why I cannot pass orthos for more than 30 minutes, aside from that one 2 hour session, which still in my eyes is not good enough.

Tigger, any other programs you recommend for reading this info in Vista? My everest ultimate doesn't read correctly, core temp doesn't function properly. Thanks in advance.

Alright, not sure if many or anyone is still reading this, but I'm still using it to keep tabs on what I'm doing. So if you're reading it, I hope what I do helps you in your decision to purchase, what to purchase and how to use it.

I had to set my vcore to 1.41 (reads 1.36 in bios, 1.368 in Cpu-Z and Everest Ultimate 2007), droops to 1.32 under orthos load (Cpu-Z and Ev. Ult. read the same).

I currently am running Vista Home Premium (real, 32 bit). It has been challenging to find programs to work correctly for reading. Orthos works fine, my older version of everest was barely working, Tat works okay, doesn't read my processor correctly, says it's a Pentium M, but the temps seem to be close to accurate. Everest reads temps a little bit lower than Tat, but very close (generally 1C difference). Plus the Ev. Ult 2k7 has a plug-in to use it's OSD in integration with the Vista Side Bar, which is very handy.

But my OC to 3.5 has been fairly easy...and I was able to hit 2.9 w/o upping the vcore. Even at 1.36 reading, it idles at 33-35C, loads to 52-55C. You can't complain about those temps with a $25 cooler and 90% OC.

My memory has been excellent, I was able to reach DDR2 1000 at 2.25V, 4-4-4-11 timings and I get ~8600Mb/s read, ~9100Mb/s write in Ev. Ult. 2k7. Also latency of 59.5ns, which is pretty damn good for intel.

This MB is awesome! I love it. Easy to use, easy to OC, and very stable. Using bios 1004.

My video is where some slight issues are, using vista drivers 7.1. ATITOOL doesn't work with this card for tweaking/oc, which I hope will be fixed someday. But the fuzzy cube and temp results are good still for use, so I keep it around. But using ATI CCC Overdrive, I can attain OC's of 621 core, 794 memory, of course there's the flickering screen issue with these drivers. So I tested 621/742 compared to stock 595/695 speeds. I dropped approx 40k in Aquamark from 120k to 80k using OC speeds, I've never ran into this issue. I upped my PCI-E to 120mhz, set my PEG to fastest and tried OC again, no change. But I can attain about 122k in Aqua with stock speeds. Hopefully this is Vista/Driver related and will be patched soon.

Alright, well I set my sys at the following for a while:
FSB - 472
vcore - 1.325

So far I'm pushing 4-4-4-10 cr2 timings. This memory rocks, it's damn stable. Glad I got it, I wouldn't change my mind on any component. Still a little trouble with the vid drivers and OC-ing. Can't get Quake 4 to work, oh well. DoW: Dark Crusade also has menu issues, partial letters. Rest of the game is rendered fine, just the menus are messed up. In game words and such are okay! It's weird as hell.

I pushed the FSB up to 490 now, left all my settings alone, set ASUS Q Fan to Performance mode, which is at least half as loud as full bore, and the cooling is still great. I'm hitting 33-35C Idle, and 47-50C Load.

Seems to run my case fans at about 50%, and it modulates my CPU fan from about 40%-80%. Which is great, it's so much quieter and still runs cool. Optimized mode sucks though, very very very quiet, but not good for oc cooling even if you have 8+ fans like I do!

When I set my Vcore to 1.325, it reads 1.29 in Bios, CPU-Z, Everest, Systool, drops to 1.26 under load, and stays there.

I am kinda using this post for notes, if it helps ya cool. Just a good way for me to keep my info and have easy access to it.

Also another note, go to google.com, they have a link for GMail, w/2.8GB space and rising for free.

Gonna try to get to 500 w/o changing anything but FSB. My settings now are rock stable and cool running ATM, I hope I can get that 10mhz out of it!

I love this machine, it works very well. In order to attain 1.32 v in Bios/Everest/systool etc I gotta set it to 1.375vcore, then it reads 1.33 and droops to 1.31 under load. But now it's 500 stable.

Mine won't run more than a few seconds maybe a minute if I'm lucky at 1.32vcore setting under orthos stress test. But oh well, I suppose even kicking the bios up to 1.375 to get 1.33 to make it stable isn't that bad of a deal.

Kinda crazy how the temps rise at that small of a voltage increase, but they still stay below limits.

Looks to have gone to 34-36C Idle and 51-53C load, so I can't really complain.

Kept the 4-4-4-10 timings at 2.25v to ddr2 @ 1000 speeds, staying nice and stable, and don't even get that hot, I'm suprised. I do have a top vent fan that helps remove heat from them though, and I'm sure it helps out a lot.

NBv - 1.25
SBv - 1.6 (may try a lower setting, especially since my Vcard isn't OC'd)
FSBv - 1.3

Gonna go test all this in orthos for max cpu/ram test overnight, and probably all day while I'm at work (till 5:30-6pm my time), it's about 20 after 10pm now, so if it passes after that I think I might have found my settings to stick with.

I've read of a few people reaching 3.5 on those 4300's but with a good boost to vcore. Of course they're hitting it below 400FSB speeds, but I am very satisfied with my build. Just wish I could OC my vcard, wish ATI Tool worked for it. Hope ATI...err AMD, will release some better drivers as I'm not the only one having this issue in vista or with 7.1 cat drivers. But this card is an animal, never fails to impress.

I get awesome results in F.E.A.R. with 1280x1024, 4x AA, 16AF, Soft Shadows on, everything turned up, averages close to 60FPS. It actually drops some if I turn soft shadows off, and from what I've read it should be very opposite as S. Shadows is supposed to be a huge performance hit...weird, I'm not gonna complain! And I even got Quake 4 to work perfectly!

I just got HL2 EP1, cranked everything up, HDR, AA, AF, all goodies, it runs 70-90fps, and sometimes in the 100s!

Thanks again Tig!

Well, at 1.33 (1.375 selection in bios) Orthos made it approx 1hr 9 minutes...kind of a bummer. I was really hoping to have had it. I coulda swore it was gonna be good and stable, but I was completely wrong. And kind of bummed, cause it seems in order to hit 3.5 orthos stable I'm gonna have to up the voltage a bit more (hopefully not much more) and with QFan in Performance mode, that chip gets fairly toasty. It floats between 55-57C, which is too hot for my blood.

Too bad it boots fine into windows and all at 1.325, but won't pass orthos for more than a minute. I'd say "maybe it's just a vista problem" but I'm sure that'd be complete crap. Oh well, I stepped it back down to 480 (3360) at 1.325, after 10 hours and some odd minutes of orthos it was 50C for both cores, and as soon as I stopped orthos they both dropped 8-9C, and then steadied around 36-38C in a matter of 30 seconds or so.

I'm gonna shoot for at least 3.4, cause that was my goal to begin with.

I wouldn't have a problem cranking all the fans back up to Mach 10, but I put the tower on my desk next to my monitor, and it's damn noisy with all those fans goin. So if I can hit 3.4 (another small FSB jump), I might be okay.

Tigger, I guess you got the good stuff at the good time, looks like my revision isn't quite as OC-able as yours. But still I'm at 3.36 from 1.86 which is insane compared to my P4 630 3.0 - 3.75.

I'm gonna keep trying for that 3.5 mark when time allows, and I hope I can get it there with something I'm missing in my settings somehow....who knows.

i found out my L629b is a good week.but 3.4 is still a monster oc from 1.8 anyway.these 6300's are very good.the board does suffer a bit with vdroop tho' but i think all boards do to a certain degree.

glad your happy tho',and glad i could help.

Bad News...Downtime...and some good news!

Well,

About two weeks ago, my PC started crashing, blue screens....vista lost some files and wouldn't boot, etc...I attempted to re-install Vista and it bluescreened 20 minutes into installation. I set the MB to all stock speeds and settings, and installed Vista without issue. Went back to OC as it was stable for over a week, running cool, running perfectly. Everything was okay for a couple of days, then I left it on and idle when I went to work one morning, got home and it had crashed to the point it got stuck in POST. I reset CMOS, and it started up, scandisked and repaired some files. At stock speeds, voltages, timings, etc, I decided to open my case up while running and felt all the heatsinks, all were cool until I touched the memory. Both were very, very, very hot to the touch, at stock speeds/voltage (DDR2 533 speeds (to match 1:1 to CPU Bus for OC-ing, so they were underclocked), 1.9V.

So naturally I ran Memtest, and about 10 minutes into memtest it found errors, I let it run for a few hours, and it had thousands of errors. I was bummed. But I decided to OC and see what happened. Got my memory up to DDR2 950...and it errored as soon as I started the test...

I ran Windows memory tester, it didn't find a damn thing naturally! So I loaded Memtest for Windows, it concurred with the results from the boot-up memtest. So I RMA's the memory back to newegg...waited...waited...and then I ended up getting a refund because they're out of stock on Buffalo Firestix 800 2 gig kits. I found some G.Skill DDR2-800, 2.1v, 4-4-4-12, the model number is PHU2 I believe, supposedly still has the Micron D9BGMs or whatever. I know that those Micron's are good for OC-ing, and I found out that my Buffalos were supposed to have had the same Micron chip on them. And reviews for Buffalo Firestix are all top notch rated, better OC's, more headroom, so I must have had a bad set or something...it happens.

I am excited for the G.Skill memory to show up as it is also well rated and was on sale so I got them for the same price I payed for the Firestix! Which is fine by me! I also read that the G.Skill are very stable, easily tweakable, can take a decent ammount of voltage and can easily hit 1000mhz, some can hit it at stock timings or slightly tighter timings!

I'll keep anyone who still reads this forum topic posted...

Now I know that if I get 1 stick of DDR2 at 1 gig, I cannot do dual channel mode. As far as I have read, at least with DDR, Dual Channel doesn't increase performance much at all. I do not know as far as DDR2, but it seems a 1 gig stick is somewhat cheaper than 2 sticks of 512...should I spend a little extra for 2 sticks for dual mode, is the performance worth it?

Your mobo should run faster with 2 x 512 than 1 x 1GB, because it can access more of your memory at once, and I know it's offtopic, but I just was wondering why you want to go so high with overclocking, I would say go for the E6300, lol. I am getting an E6400 over the summer for my new build, and I am going to leave it at its 2.4 factory settings, factory settings FTW! (processor and memory only, I have oc'ed my gfx card before) lol, mainly because I can't figure out how.. :banghead:
