Explanations for deleted posts?

I know I post off the wall stuff sometimes. I know I shouldn't but at the time it seems like a good idea. I like to make people laugh.

The only thing I dislike on TPU is when you delete a post without an explanation. I don't mind the delete. Honestly I don't. You guys have a job and you have to do it.

But don't you think a nice little PM giving a reason why would be good? In return Ill do my best to NOT post stuff that "needs" to be deleted.

Honestly, you will usually know why without us saying anything, right? I'm not being a jerk here, but I'm too damn busy with a full time job, graduate school, and kids to send PM's to everyone to explain everything. I'd spend half my day doing this. However, if you take the time to PM me to ask why something is deleted, I am more than happy to give an explanation.

I understand man. But how do I know WHO deleted it? I mean sometime I honestly have no idea why it was deleted.

You don't need to know if something is deleted from say a news/reviews forum thread that bears no relevance to the topic, and which makes it to the front-page.

And we don't need to inflate the moderators team just to accommodate/patrol trivial, useless posts.

Please remember, that the mods are all volunteers with real lives outside of TPU. There is no reason that we should have to explain everything nor do any of us have the time. Now, if we were being paid, that may be a different story.

I don't need to know. No one really does. But at the same time its a courtesy. FYI this wasn't directed at you in particular. This happens all over the place.

On a given day, I get rid of anywhere between 15~20 posts. If I have to intimate everyone about it, I'll have to hire a secretary.

why hallo thar!

When posts are deleted, mods can see them and leave a reason that other mods can see.

Generally, there is two reasons.

1. off topic/moderator asked someone to stop and they didnt/infraction given, and post deleted

2. quoting off topic material/replying to off topic material.

for example, in a for sale thread i had a discussion earlier today with someone about whether a blurry image with a name counted or not. A clearer picture was posted, and thus the conversation was deleted. It shouldnt have been there in the first place (assuming the thread followed the rules) so it went away.

We have a few trolls coming back under fake accounts constantly, they get the spam button to remove them. If you quoted or replied to one of them, its likely you'd get your posts deleted since you technically were baited by a troll.

Can you make it to where everyone can see the "deleted post" post? That way you at least know who and why it was deleted?

things i forgot (and mailman beat me to one point)

1. the crap no one reads when they sign up, states that moderators at TPU can delete anything they want, when they want, for no reason. Since 99% of posts deleted are because they broke rules or make no sense with the broken rules posts deleted, it rarely affects anyone.

2. Do YOU want to be the one to ask w1zzard to make a script so that the owner of posts can see the reason his psot was deleted? I dont. (Usually the reason is just something like "cleanup" or "off-topic" or "quoted deleted post" anyway)

3. When a troll/ban evader comes and posts, he could get 10 or 20 replies. it'd be hell on earth to PM all those users explaining why their replies got deleted with his/hers - moreso since we have an unwritten rule to not talk about other users infractions.

From what I remember, TPU is a free service. Start paying w1zzard and the mods, and im sure they will be more than happy to convenience you.

Ive been into threads where a lot has been deleted and it looks a right mess.

I thought this was the case anyway, but maybe w1zz could enable it so that the persons post who got deleted can see the "leftover", because then they can see the reason it got deleted?

I.e you can only see your own posts which get deleted, not everyones.

i agree.

Thing is, to give specific notes to each user is just a lot more work. I see many mods just do the same as me, tick the boxes for the relevant posts and hit delete - and that gives you one box for a generic comment on why it was deleted. Seeing "quotes deleted text" or "cleanup" really wont help anyone.

I agree with btar on this one - why would you need to be able to see your deleted post? You know what it was because you wrote it in the first place. Surely you'd stop and think before posting something and consider weather its suitable or not?

A feature like this would take alot of time and effort to implement yet benefit but a few members, and like btar said, just enable people to bitch / moan, which will result in MORE deleted posts . . . and on and on it goes :rolleyes:

I don't need to handle anyone's questioning, in any given situation. Any answering I give are purely optional/voluntary. Reading deleted posts serves no purpose, as do knowing who deleted them
