while im playing a game here lately, i've had a program come on in the background that overrides my current game window and it minimizes it mid-game, that can be annoying when you're playing fast paced first persons and crap. i dont see a task that comes and goes when i get back to desktop so i cant find out by just waiting on it.

someone give me a way to diagnose this.

I blame DivX codecs. They do stuff like that.

Have you thought to look in the "Task Manager" to find out what is running on startup?

I bet a bit of google along with the names of the processes running there will give you a good idea of what can be turned off or not.

Just seems the most logical place to start!

Well, check your background programs and cross check them here, use the task list in the menu Answers That Work

It could be a messenger service too, my YIM will do that to me if someone signs on when I am playing.

Sometimes happens to me when AVG updates itself, VERY annoying while you're playing TF2

I blame Windows period, especially XP. It loves to throw dialogs over windows, or take active windows and de-prioritize them by putting something else over the top, that is definatley not more important.

Similarily it does it with the mouse cursor.

With exception to making some pretty odd-ball coding adventures to the explorer shell itself, you just have to make sure all background programs are inactive or off.

It can also be services related to certain programs as well.
