Gimp?

I've read about the image editing program "GIMP" or the poor man's photo shop. I bought a computer magazine which comes with a disk with GIMP on it. I don't know if it is a trial version. Is GIMP a free program? Or do you have to pay for it? Someone told me that it's like CPUID where you can just download it.

Anything is better than editing photos in MSPaint. :laugh:

Adobe photo shop costs >$500. I think I'll be using GIMP for now....

GIMP is free, licensed under the GNU GPL (at least I think it's licensed under the GPL, I know for a fact it's free)

GIMP is free! I use it while working in Linux and it's pretty good -not photoshop good, but infinitely better than paint.

It has a lot of power but it is a little hard to get used to for some users, if you can't find how to do something (i've been there with GIMP in the past) asking in their forums or doing a quick google normally helps find the feature you're after.

give it a go (may as well - it's free afterall) - most basic stuff is easy, but it depends on the user on if you find some of the more advanced stuff intuitive or not (i didn't, but people i know did).

Like everyone else has said Gimp is free and if you have used photoshop then youll be fine with it. Also consider paint.net also free and an excellent proggy.

It say's on GIMP's official website that the only version available for windows only works with windows XP SP2. I have windows vista home premium 64-bit. Should I have any issues because of that?

just installed it on win 7 x64 yesterday to be honest, it works great, i have photoshop for my g/f to use professionally, but she wanted to see whta it was like anyways, she thinks that if you aren't a photoshop pro, it's an awsome program to use if you need an editor like photoshop, very powerful for a free app.

it actually sais "Installer for Windows XP SP2 or later" so will work fine on vista/win7.

GIMP works on VISTA just fine. Love the FREE part too.

I've run with Paintshop Pro 8 for some time, but GIMP has gotten me hooked since it can read and export to more formats.

GIMP works well with the FREE OpenOffice too. It's like drag and drop for the most part.

Gimp can't really hold a candle to the Photoshop goodness, but most people that download Photoshop (wich is like everyone) doesn't use those awesome futures at all. Gimp is just fine for most people. Plus, as everyone already said, it's free.

Gimp is quite powerful for the average Joe, but it takes effort to learn. I use it occasionally to resize photos and convert image format, and other basic things. My only gripe about it is that it takes its time to startup, like most other freewares.

Well, if you are a Pro in Photoshop it'll seem not so easy to work with GIMP - the functionality is almost the same but the GUI is pretty much different and you'll probably break a lot of nerves (at least I did). Anyway, if you have no experience with Adobe's PS, give GIMP a try. The best way to get used to its interface is to use it and to watch a lot of video tutorials. Also, they have these nice and easy to get GIMP Tutorials on their web site.
