Problem going to sandy bridge will cost me a motherboard and memory also raising the price well above the Q9650

Yes, unfortunately upgrading your system will be a bit expensive. I'm in the same boat if you look at my specs. Unfortunately, as good as it is, this is a dead platform, so it's not worth spending significant amounts of money on it. Complete replacement is the only worthwhile upgrade.

Now, I've managed to overclock my E8500 to 4.11GHz, which gives a very significant performance boost. Try overclocking yours and while it might not go quite as high, you'll see a significant performance boost as well.

Finally, your E8400 is plenty fast just the way it is, so I don't think the performance drop you're seeing is because of that. I'm not sure where the problem lies, but I'm pretty sure it's a software issue, so I suggest grabbing another hard disc or creating a new partition and installing Windows fresh on to it there, then see how your system runs.

I see that you have Crossfire motherboard. I'm 100% certain the problem is in the unofficial SLI patch, as your mobo wasn't designed and optimised for SLI (and that importantly includes the BIOS). If reinstalling Windows doesn't fix it, then you have a very good case for upgrading the rest of the system.

Just installed them, did get a bit of an increase in performance. These drivers were not listed on nVidia site!

Yeah it was a "magic" driver that appeared and disappeared at EVGA site :)

Just one question do you get full GPU usage in Sli mode on any other game or benchmark like for example 3dmark Vantage?

Running BFBC2 loads the cards at about 25-30%, 3Dmark loads the cards way up in the 80-90% range....

I tend to agree with the other guys here, BFBC2 is a very cpu intensive game and with nvidia cards even more...

All you really need is a quad core processor ;)

already OC'd to 3,6 stock voltages (auto) and stock cooling. 3,8 is not stable and crashes.

stop overclocking with settings on auto i bet you can get it clocked higher

yep and more volts makes more heat which makes the chip less stable on a cheaper cooler. proper volts i bet he can get the chip to 3.8-4ghz

You can pick up a used Q9550 for in the $200 range. Still doesn't perform at the level of a i7 2500, but close enough and won't cost you a new board and memory. Hell, you could even go with a Q6600, which I've seen go in the $120 range.

tons of chips seen Q8200's go for around $100 and he can get $40-60 for that E8400

Guy's, thanks for your response, very nice advice...

I Installed the well acclaimed Noctua NH-U12P SE2 cooler, changed the ram for a pair of 1066 corsair dominator totalling 4gb and awaiting another pair.

OC'd the system to 4 ghz 445*9 slightly raised voltages for cpu and ram and temps reached while playing BFBC2 was a cool 50c at high settings.

The sli'd video cards with fans @ 65% run pretty cool at 65c and getting 50-60 fps.

Thanks much for your advice...

65% fan?!
thats loud, leave them on autofan, they will hit 75C but stay at 45-50% fan speed which is MUCH better IMO
