So I desperately need a new gpu and I'm thinking about picking up the EVGA GTX 480. I need a card that can max dx11 games at 1900x1200 at 30+fps. I would like to go the single gpu route but if you think dualgpu cards would be better then I will consider it. Also I'm a huge fan of Nvidia and EVGA because of past experiences so I would like to stick to their products unless you can convince me otherwise.

So my question is will Nvidia be releasing any single gpu cards with better performance then the gtx480 in the next 6 months or is their next card in the line-up going to be dualgpu?

I've been looking around the web and I saw no sign of the next card in their line-up but logic dictates that Nvidia will be releasing a gpu to compete with the higher end 5970. If anyone could provide more info and suggestions it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

if you have an extra $500 to spend, go for it. For any less though, price wise the 470 is the only other card I would buy from Nvidia currently. the 2series prices are too close to not get a 470/480.

Also welcome to TPU;)

They are planning on bringing out newer cards, but they will be less performance - wise compared to the 480. btw, welcome! Its up to you to decide whether you feel you can wait or not. ;) Anyways, I know how you feel when you game right now, I'm feeling the same! But sadly I can't afford to splash on a dx11 card right now, I've got more urgent things to attend to!

As mention a new PCB layout is in the works. If you buy now do keep in mind that it's very possible that you maybe buying a 1st gen 400 series. From what I've read in another forum they are coming out with a better PCB but it's not clear what it's for as of yet. It could be for an OC model or something else, I really don't know. But for all intent and purpose I would hold out until the dust settles. Wait until mid summer to see how things turn out. At least by then, hopefully, there will be more in stock and perhaps at a lower price point.

So the gtx 480 will be the highest performing card Nvidia will be releasing this year? Wow thats surprising, I thought they would of been releasing a dual gpu card to compete with the 5970. This info make me a little dissapointed in Nvidia.....

Oh and thanks for all the welcomes, this is a great community.

Who knows, since the 480 has been gimped down a notch, maybe they'll fork one with all 512sp (they notched it down to 480 I think) et al, better cooling. Only NV knows that at this time. Whats confirmed, and that too isn't sure, its that there will be mainstream cards, now again nobody knows when.

They dont really need a dual gpu card at this point tbh the 480 is almost as good as the 5970 eventually im sure they will butprobably not till christamas if at all this year. I say get a 470 and maybe another later on. the 470 trails the 480 a little, but it kills a 5850, and in some instances (mainly DX 11 stuff) kills the 5870 to. its the best bang for buck card right now
