Well it's custom 970 vs Ref 780 Ti, but everyone knows 780 Ti shines with overclock and custom cooling. In reality it's more like this:

Exactly! The only Fermi based card I ever owned was a (second hand) GTX 460 which was a fab card for it's generation, I then jumped to the GTX 670 because it offered 90%+ of the performance of a 680/7970 for considerably less money. From that... straight to the good old GTX 970 which has been rocking benchmarks and company bottom lines ever since.

The chart above proves the point nicely.

Same here, I always bought 200-300€ cards, always semi-highend, the HD 5850 was the best of them. Bought it for 290€ and used it from early 2010 to end 2013, almost 4 years. Now I got me an year old 780 Ti DCUII from a friend, that has still 2 years warranty on it for 250 bucks, let's see how long I'll use it. Performance in semi highend is really good, price/performance is the best for users who want something fast but not expensive. I see everything over 300 already as expensive. GTX 980 is ~20% faster than 970 for 200 bucks more, that's really bad. Even the 980 Ti is better price to performance compared to the 980, I'd never buy 500€ cards anyway, they are ~always only 10-20% faster, for 100-200 bucks more, that's a 30-40% price difference for 10-20% more performance, not worth it if you ask me.

actually, here's the section of that Star Wars benchmark that is relevant when comparing my 780ti to a comparable 970 (I normally run my card at the same clocks as that Gainward model and I use a 2560*1600 30" monitor)-

Exactly what I meant, I'm just too lazy to make a picture of it, thanks. Also the GTX 980 Strixx is only 8% faster than the 780 Ti Phantom and the 390X IceQ is surprisingly 4% faster than the GTX 980. I really like PCGH reviews, they use custom cards all the way - a lot better than reference cards, who nobody buys after a while (or don't even exist).
