Why would you get an HD3870 if the 8800GT performs better and that for the same price?

You put the ASS in assumptions my friend! :D

Well, you may have a valid point there, but I will be playing it smart and waiting to see the actual performance of this card in comparison to it's competitors from the NV side. You could be dead on, or dead wrong. Right now the 8800GT is a winner, no doubts or second thoughts about it (aside from recent card failure issues that is...). But if ATI has a trick up their sleeve beyond DX10.1 and SM 4.1, and just a die shrink for the r600 core, the ATI side of things could get interesting. I hope to see an ATI card that can match the price/performance of the GT, as that would be a great situation, and great competetiveness. But in reality, we won't REALLY know until we get a few users to purchase them, game and bench them, let us know the results from use, OC-ing, etc. I will read some pro reviews, but I do tend to wait and see consumer reviews also, can give one a heads-up about possible issues/situations to deal with. So let's hope that ATI can at least become competetive at this price point for now..and maybe take on the upper teir GF cards in the future.

Since the 8800GT and 8800GTX is so close in performance, the 38xx would have to beat both to succeed, AMD is still losing money fast they can't afford to continue losing.

Why would you get an HD3870 if the 8800GT performs better and that for the same price?

1 reason already....

New nvidia and linux don't get along....

Also lets remember that in "some" games the 2900xt beats on the 8800gtx...
We are having wars on video cards because games are all being designed around nvidia cards.
It's not that drivers just suck, or that the video card sucks, although that doesn't help.

Always depends on what you need/use the card for :)

The price/performance issue should balance itself out. If the 8800GT is better, the price of the ATI card will go down. Also the RV670 runs very cool. I need my system to be quiet since it runs 24/7.
