Well my Q6600 didnt work in either of my 2 680i's nor my 780i so i decided to remove te ihs.....i was not planning on it being soldered......at least it was dead prior.

That sucks.

You should have sanded it down to the core;) But hey, overclockers cant be stopped.:D

Just a quick question, why would you take the processor apart?

Because then you will be able to oc much higher.;)
Some cpu have heatspreaders on them that are only sealed with some sort of rubber glue and other are soldered to the core.
My old X2 4000 heatspreader came of very easy and was way cooler after removing the thing. So oc'ed higher.
But i did have to change the cooler bracket because it would not fit proper other wise.

Actually, in this case, I think it was because the CPU was already dead, so he did it just to do it.

Fair enough, it was just that WileE seemed to have done it to several AMD CPUs, OUCH is definitely a fitting response to that though Solaris.

Benchmark Scores I dont have time for that.
My friend just got his hands on a Q6400 ES, I'll drop him an email and see if he is going to use it, or get rid of it. I'm sure, if he is going to get rid of it, he'll give me a good price, which means you will get a good price. :)

that would be awsome thank you

dam man, did your quad just crap out? haha how come you didn't try rma? and i remember some people were taking of ihs without damage(at least visually) to the chip, they inserted a razor in each corner of the ihs and the heated it till the pcb/chip just fell off of the ihs, htough they were using older celerons haha

my quad was dead before hand i didnt RMA mainly because i couldnt RMA it was lapped and bought second hand....i dont think intel would accept a processor that was lapped and showed up in buble wrap.

Wow... I thought it was burnt lol, but reading the thread it's borken by pulling off the ihs.. Does every proccy have their IHS soldered? I seen some used only some thermal paste of some sort. Good luck with the proccy hunt sol. :D

thnx im trying...as for the proc...no it was not killed by pulling the ihs off....it was dead before...and no not all ihs's are soldered my E7200 isnt soldered.

Hm... I guess you haven't read/seen about the C2D's having the IHS soldered on to the cores itself. I remember reading on TPU somewhere (or maybe it was [H]?) but people found out that they were soldered on the hard way just a few days after the C2D's were released.

actually i knew they were soldered on..i was simply hoping to get lucky.

touch of superglue here an ther..nothin that cant be fixed easy...

or maybe not :D

nice work on that quad man  thats fucking brutal

gl finding a new 1

lol thnx

Nicely done Solaris :D.

Why processor companies solder their cores to the IHS?

transfer heat better than TIM

2 words "RMA it" lol (if only) (re original post)

i cannot i seriously doubt they will take a lapped processor.

That sucks.

You should have sanded it down to the core;) But hey, overclockers cant be stopped.:D

ya but it was already dead so i had nothing to loose.

Just a quick question, why would you take the processor apart?

because i wanted to have hot techno sex with its insides.

Actually, in this case, I think it was because the CPU was already dead, so he did it just to do it.

THANK YOU!

Sorry for making a totally useless post, I'm not into taking processors apart yet (Currently running a laptop) I had to laugh at your response to the RMA idea though lol.

Sorry off topic but what did you say to gigabyte to allow you the RMA? Just "I installed the cpu correctly and the pins bent"?

Took it back to the store I got it from (cant take it straight back to GB here, they have distributors) and they were like "oh bent pins...thats user error, we cant do anything". I told them it was the motherboard that was dodgy as I installed it correctly and it wasnt user error. Anyway, after almost getting into an argument, I just said "can you just try and take it back to GB" and so they did. A month later and I had a brand new MB.

Well to replace that motherboard I recently purchaced a brand new one from OCUK. Do you think if I tried to RMA the faulty one back they would accept it or do they take a note of the serial number? It's probably not worth it though, if they found out I was sending back a product that I didn't buy from them it would be taken as fraud, no?

Maybe I should do what MRCL does and hang it up on my wall lol :)

*again sorry for being off topic

it would not be fraud but they might not take it if its bought second hand..i know XFX and EVGA will do it it depends on how awsome their customer service is id go for it nothing to loose.

What is going on. This is my third removed IHS thread that I`m seeing today. For a moment I felt deja vu.

Nah, I only ever killed one cpu by removing the IHS. I have 2 other naked AMDs that survived just fine. lol.

That thread you posted earlier on in this thread suggested otherwise, perhaps I should have paid more attention.

Sorry Sol, no Q6400, he wants way to much for it. He wanted $180 for it, for that price you can go buy a new Q6600, and he refused to budge on the price because it is an ES. But it doesn't even have unlocked multipliers.
