I get low fps and stutters when I have a good gaming laptop

I have exactly the same problem. It does not occure everytime, but gpu temp climbs up really fast, even though I am running COD at lowest settings it sometimes drops to below 20fps.

I just tried it for like 10min while running HWiNFO. This time fps did not drop that low, not sure why. But temp went from 49c to 89c within 2minutes. I cleaned the fans literally yesterday, so that can not be the problem.

I did uninstall Armoury crate, coz I thought that might help, but it did not.
Pretty sure I have had this problem since I bought the laptop (late 2020?), but I play so rarely so it took a while to find out.

Any ideas what to try and what might be causing it? This is pretty ridic.

Your monitor is 144Hz. Why are you not limiting your framerate to 60-90 fps ? I have a G14 too, but with a GTX1650. And when i play on it i always limit my framerate to 30 or 60fps depending on the type of game.
I also did unerclock my 4800HS using the guide bellow, i have yet to see a real performance hit, but the temperature dropped by about 15-20ºC. Try this, you can easily change it if you want more performance:
I tried it but it doesn't seem to get any better :/

Try this perhaps
It says my cpu is not compatible :/

You should be able to change the CPU TDP in the bios, even ULV laptops have this option. The quality of Asus products has continued to deteriorate in recent years. I don't doubt it's a defect in the cooling system.

PS: I would have already uninstalled Windows 11 and gone back to the beautiful and stable Windows 10 just in case. But that's just my opinion as a W11 hater.

I skipped most comments so I apologize if I repeat.

Check Task Manager to see if there is something rogue consuming resources.

Check RAM.

Perhaps a re-paste of GPU and CPU.

Hope you can solve it. Cheers!

This is my task manager.
I experience stutters even on Roblox now ugh.

If you format and install w10 this shouldn't happen. Also block Windows suggested OS update.
I blocked windows OS update. I'll try to install windows 10 with "MediaCreation tool", do you know if it's okay to do so ?
Also, the stutters happen in each and every game, even roblox.. I am not a genius but i think my PC should be able to run roblox without freezing...

I assume that as it says in the bios, the Asus software has control over these settings. Yeah, To install Windows you can use the Microsoft tool.

Have you ever stopped to wonder if your laptop is not switching to iGPU due to some power management error?

haha no i havent, i don't know the difference between dedicated gpu and igpu :/. But that being said i've already set this : (sorry for the french btw)

You followed that tutorial and you didn't get lower frequency/temperature ? Check the video again, you might have missed a step.
I'll watch it again and then i'll put the logs

I watched the tutorial again and I found something strange, I don't think this should be here

YES. We don't know if a technician put some cheapo thermal "tooth"paste, or something proper like Arctic MX6 or Noctua NT-H2. This is HUGE IMPORTANT for "high performance" laptops.
But, it also could be your laptop having such cheap cooling solution. For example, I got Asus Tuf F15 (no bling bling fancy "Dash" naming, so a little cheaper/simplier version lol), it has i5-10300H and GTX 1650. This laptop is purchased for studying (lol), and for around ~40% discount price (because of "old YOM"), so I am very happy with it. But, I added another 8 GB of RAM into it and replaced SSD with speedier/bigger one, and saw that the cooling solution is "so-so" for this system. It heats 80+80 C CPU and GPU in gaming scenario, that's why I see it's not a beast, but just good middle-performace laptop. For normal gaming I have PC which is like 2x better than this laptop. So, either buy a "gaming laptop" for $/EUR 2000+, or be happy with normal desktop PC. ;) Anything less money is cheap for "gaming" laptop so there are probably some "anti-gaming" features. (For example I saw old "gaming" Lenovo laptop with... SINGLE MEMORY SLOT and no soldered extra ram... ROFL)

Do you think that rolling back to windows 10 would be better ?
I can't afford a re-paste of my cpu and gpu, i already brought it to a technician in july and it cost around 130$ :/

Here is some info about my gpu :
Capture d'écran 2023-10-24 134131.png

I noticed that I have low gpu usage i think ?
I'm running minecraft and my GPU (nvidia) usage is around 8% and 20% ?? My processor is at 30% and the other gpu is at 7%

UPDATE : ive tried monitoring my stats while playing and it turned out that when the fps drop the gpu usage drop from 99% to 40-50%. The temps are normal around 85 degrees.

I think you did what you can, you took it to a tec guy to refurbish your laptop. You gathered all the info about actual behavior in terms of gaming and temps look reasonable.

Mate, to bring this into realistic perspective. A laptop today is advertised as a gaming laptop if it provides a discrete GPU/VRAM and let you play 3D video games somewhere from 30-60fps on average. That is because of multiple factors:
1) Laptops have drastically reduced capability of cooling main components (CPU/GPU/VRAM etc.), it is because of space and weight and cost of cooling material.
2) There are no rules for what a gaming laptop to deliver min performance if advertised as gaming laptop.
- (In your case it says 4800HS + RTX 2060 maxQ, but the components are not equivalent to desktop counterparts performancewise [reduced frequencies to reduce heat output because of limited cooling])

Because of that you have to reduce your expectations accordingly really drastically to understand what your gaming laptop can provide you in terms of 3D video gaming.

Unfortunatly this is true for almost every gaming laptop series, only the very high end models of recent series have proper cooling integrated to provide constant performance.

Some posts mentioned to set frame limiter to 30fps or 60fps (consols do it like that: xbox/ps e.g.), that is one real option to minimize possibility of drastic perf drops during gaming.

Alright I understand its just that i didn’t expect my pc to run games like GTAV or RDR2 very smoothly and one day just stop doing it :/
Thanks for your reply :)

Hi,
Likely not a good way to roll back to 10 besides a clean install 10 pro versions seems to help a lot to get rid of updating to 11 and TPU does sponsor godeal24 software site for inexpensive software.

If you ever do clean install or even fix the issue it's well past time to use system imaging
Macrium reflect is free and good app

I use an older 6.3 version that still works perfectly
Since reflect did go subscription don't update the app and you don't need to register it just no and close those popups.

Pretty extensive tutorial here how to use the app I personally just use the winpe flash drive media reflect prompts you to create I exclusively use it to create or restore images = nice to get used to using it one day you might need to anyway ;)

After you create it and test it it's really all you ever need besides somewhere to name a folder and save the system image into.

Good luck.

Hi,
This is a good little app to export and import your drivers seeing this is a laptop it can give you a good start
Some apps you'll still need to download and install from the manufactures website though.

Just unblock the zip folder/ extract all and run dd.exe as admin and choose backup/ scan current system/ you can also select to export windows drivers to but windows can install those later plus it takes up more space, then hit backup and where.
I save the drivers to the dd folder and have them both on a flashdrive so it's easy to have the app and drivers in the same place.
Download Double Driver - MajorGeeks

There's no need to export the drivers when you can just redownload the latest versions, besides, one of those drivers could be the issue.

The point of a clean install is a clean install.
